How to sell a liened car to a private party?

I've always traded my cars in and let the dealer worry about the title and payoff. How do you sell a car to a private party?
I was told by the bank that the title would be sent out 72 hrs after they received payment.
Problem is, the buyer is from NY (4hr ride). I need to figure out the logistics of this transaction. Any pointers would be appreciated.

What I did when I sold my car to a guy from out of state was this.

He made out a check for the balance(Payoff) to the bank. The balance to me.

Then he drove the car away under my insurance/plates. When I got the title, I signed it and sent it off to them and they sent me my plates back.

I thought about that, but I'm a little leary as the buyer is a kid (he needs a cosigner). When he came up for a testdrive, he found 3rd instead of 5th and 4th instead of 6th more than once. I had to drive it to show him what it could REALLY do

Rich-Is the car considered sold? I have a buddy who is local, knows how to shift, and is interested in checking it out. He's not a kid and this would be his 2nd LT1 Z. I was gonna PM you and see if you were gonna be at the dyno day because he wanted to check it out then.
Lemme know what the deal is!

Hey Brian,
Still looking for that finder's fee, huh? The kid drove it last Friday and called me last night. I told him I'd hold it til this weekend. I was planning on hitting the dyno day and Hebert's on Sat.
See you there,
Rich

Actually, not really Rich, I had honestly thought you weren't going to sell it. Then the other day my buddy expressed some interest in it so I figured I'd shoot you a PM. Didn't expect this though! I'll tell him what the deal is. Definitely see you Saturday man!
