...well, in the next few weeks my car comes off-the-road once again for its winter hibernation, though it was hardly on-the-road this year (only 364mi so far). Last winter I had 4 mouse nests, 3 in the engine compartment & 1 in the nose between the cover and the body and other visual spots where they had crawled around under the cover between the winshield and the wiper cowl area. I did set traps late in the season and caught 6 mice, but I have no way of knowing if they lived in the garage or they were just passing thru for the bait. Anyway, I intend to use the cover once again, but any suggestions for mouse repellent? Those sonic things don't work and I am afraid that mothballs could be danerous or damage painted surfaces. Ideas? Thanks.

I read that Irish Spring soap (open box) placed strategically works. I've never tried it though.

Well, I pulled up the cover and lifted the hood today for the first time since Oct 1st. I had cut up Irish Spring soap bars and put them in the various nooks. Having had the mice nests last winter I figured I had to do something and it sounded like it would work in theory. I cut up 3 bars into 18 pieces and put them in all of the cracks/crevices of the engine bay, including the 4 spots where the nests were built last year. So, I lift the hood only to find that the soap idea is a FAILURE. There is literally crap everywhere, I don't know where to even start cleaning. It seems to be 10x worse than last year ...And the little b@st@rds even ate some of the soap! Not one piece was left untouched and there are actually 2 pieces missing(?). I figure I'll just take the shop vac and start vacuuming.... to be followed by hours of polishing/shining. Hopefully the cleaning/polishing chemicals will remove the lovely smell of mice. Not quite sure what I will do next year, but I have to figure something out. I do not plan on starting it yet, as I don't want the warmth of the engine to attract them back into the garage and my car is not technically on-the-road 'til 4/1, but right now, my only goal is to clean it up.

 

If you put a ram air hood on your car I would mistake it for mine. Why don't you drive it much?

 

A friend of mine uses dryer sheets when he stores his C4 Vette - a couple in the interior and a few under the hood, and he says so far (in about seven years) he's never had a problem.

When we bought our 71 Camaro, the previous owner took this to the extreme and placed a whole box' worth throughout the car!
