Exclamation WAAAAYYY too much PSI!!

Just wanted to post this prob I had at the track the other night. I've got the NX kit with the "auto" heater, transducer deal, just got my bottle filled and headed to the track. I turned on the heater to make sure I was all ready to go, got like a 45 minute drive to the track. When I got there I removed my spare cover so I could check out my pressure and talk bout hot!! PSI was sitting on about 25-2600. Scared the $hit out of me, had my 9 yr. old son with me. I've got the blow down tube hooked up to spec. outside of the car etc. but I didnt flare none of the fittings cause its a bitch getting everthing lined up it just kinda slip fits together. Anyone ever had to "use" their blowdown tube? If you got this type heater, just keep an eye on your psi, dont rely on anything! I almost forgot to purge to get the psi down, prolly would have leaned it out with 2500 psi ya think, had to waste abunch of N2O, that really sucked.

The way the NX kit works you have to make sure the bottle is OPEN before you turn on the heater!!! Other wise the pressure builds up but becasue the bottle is not open the pressure sensor cannot read what is going on so it just keeps heating away!

A couple points worth noting:

-XKnight is correct, in that most installations require the bottle vale to be open or else just what you had happen WILL occur. The Transducer can't sense the pressure if the Valve is closed.

-If you want to run the heater while the valve is closed NX makes another fittting that can be put in the Blow-Off port that will allow you to to do this. If you like I can snap pictures of my bottle with said fitting.

-As far as a lean condition, it would've actualy been opposite. the N20 Solenoid probably would've never opened with that much pressure against it. Anything above 1100-1200psi and the Noid probably isn't going to open.

Good luck! And fix that Blowdown tube!

Exclamation

Kurtis, another interested person in that fitting, for sure. I'd find it very useful; I'd just run the bottle heater every time I drove the car, and if I "needed" it for some reason, I'd just run the remote bottle opener; this way I'd never have to waste nitrous in my lines if I decide not to use it.

I'd also like to know how you knew there was 2500-2600 lbs of pressure in the bottle? I've never seen a nitrous pressure gauge go that high. My Autometer gauge in my dash only goes to 1600psi. I have a liquid filled NX gauge in the back (I have an older style NX heater that had the nitrous gauge built into the bottle heater tranducer), and it only goes to 1500psi.

I've had my bottle hit 1200 psi before; ran the heater too long with the bottle closed (forgot about it). Nothing really alarming; I just had to let it cool off a little.

Guys I apologize, I just didn't have time to get to this and I'm heading out of town this morning. My bottle(s) are out at my dad's house though I have to pick them up this morning before I leave, and so I'll take some pics of how this thing works when I get back Friday evening.

Sorry guys, I can't seem to find the part # for this thing. If ya give Ricky a call at NX I'm sure he can find it for ya.

Good luck!
