Timming retard boxes

What systems are you guys running to pull back timing for the spray? Cant make up my mind if I want to get the car retuned for spray and have the timing pulled back at all times or to do a timing box.

Neil

I wouldnt have the timing pulled through a tune. I would definately recommend getting a retard box. I went with the mallory 685 that is my retard, window switch, and upgraded ignition all in one.

Its a very good quality box and a very good bang for the buck considering all of the features it has to offer. Pulling timing through a tune is a bad idea because the timing will be pulled at all times, not just when spraying. Pulling timing on a street car is not what you want since you are sacrificing power.

I ran it for the majority of the summer with no problems and i was very pleased with the way it worked. I know before people were having problems with them getting to hot but mallory fixed that and i havent heard of anyone having a problem since.

Mallory sure does seem like toi have more features and the digital 6 is wayy more than I want to spend, looks more and more like a viable option.

Another thing with the mallory apposed to the MSD is that im pretty sure that you have to buy pills to set the window on the MSD box but the mallory you can adjust it with the push of a button. IMO for a nitrous app the mallory is the only way to go.

The old style MSD window switch requires the rpm pills, they also make a digital.

The MSD Digital 6 does not have a window switch.

back on topic:

If you don't already have an ignition box go with the 685

I've heard of overheating problems as well, but then again, we don't exactly have a perfect spot to mount these boxes other then the glovebox or crammed somewhere in the engine bay. That alone probably doesn't help. I since moved mine to the trunk so it should have plenty of breathing room now.

I mounted mine where the intake goes down into the fenderwell. Since I have the ram air box with the hood I didn't have anything going down there anymore. It seems like it gets a lot of air and doesn't get too hot at operating temps.

I was tempted to do a ram air conversion just to mount the box in that spot with ease. I figured it wouldn't be cost effective though so I ended up mounting it in the back seat. Me changing my mind as always, I then decided to once again relocate it and now it is in its new permenent home, the trunk.
