NOS on high milege LS1?

Hello everyone,
I am a new member here but not new to forums or the LS1 world. On December 6, 2007 I was blessed with the birth of my daughter Marissa! However I also made the ultimate sacrifice and sold my C5 Vette in order to pay off my truck loan, buy baby furniture and have new windows installed in my home. After all that I had some money left to buy myself a toy so I recently purchased a 2000 LS1 Z28 which I got a great deal on mainly due to the high milege (170K)

I havn't done a thing to it yet, it is bone stock and runs great! Of coarse I have big plans for it and a future of drag racing the car. I always wanted to put NOS on my vette but decided not to take a chance with a more expensive car. I've done some research here and plan on calling the Nitrous Outlet for some more info but as my title states what do you guys think about putting NOS on this 170K mile LS1? Will it kill the engine first shot or maybe hold up a while? I also plan on doing the basic bolt on mods as well.

Sorry for rambling on, look forward to sharing info on this forum.

Thanks Rick

My best advice before you proceed with nitrous is to make sure the motor has a clean bill of health mechanically. Have a compression and cylinder leak down test done. Assuming that is good, I would probably go with a small shot and make sure you run all of the "safety" devices which are outlined in the "sticky" on the nitrous forum page. The LS1 is a stout engine, but if you are going to start modifying, you should always keep a plan for a rebuild in mind down the road.

Thanks for your input, the motor doesn't smoke, leak or burn any oil but your recommendations of a leak down & compression test are a smart idea. What tools are needed to perform these tests? Is it something a driveway mechanic (me) can perform at home?

Also I wonder how many people out there are spraying their high milege
LS1's.......Please feel free to post your milege, what HP shot and how often you spray it!

Sears sells both of those testers, on the other hand too, taking it to a mechanic and paying for diagnostic fee may be a cost effective way of doing it as well versus buying the tools.
