Nitrous, your opinion..
Nitrous, your opinion..
Considering forms of forced induction...not sure what to go with...so perhaps you can help
.
Thought about a blower or a turbo...but the kits are expensive, i dont really trust a used kit, and plus it could blow my engine even with low boost settings..and apparently tuning is a real PIA. And then the rings are going to go eventually, and ill lose horsepower, and then my engine will have to be expensively rebuilt...etc.
So that being said, i've thought about nitrous. I figure to not use it that much..thereby reducing wear and tear on my engine, the kits are cheaper and probably easier to install, and i've heard are generally safer engine wise then blowers/turbos.
In general, how do you like your nitrous? How is it for use on the street?(i really never go to the track, and might only go once or twice just to see what the car runs). How does it feel when the nitrous kicks in..and you jump up literally 100+ hp? is it hard to control the rush of power? (never been in a nitrous car)
The setup I am likely to have at the time of installation will be le1heads/224-230 cam(plus supporting mods)...i figure to have around 360rwhp or so through an auto.
If I threw on a 100 shot, am i going to blow out my bottom end with say 460 rwhp?
All things considering, if you had to do it again, would you choose nitrous as your power adder?

Hmmmm
Any power adder is a risk on your motor. All power adders increase air/fuel as well as pressure in the cylinders. N20 has been called a liquid supercharger and that is pretty accurate, it does the same thing. Tuning is different though.
A street car, street tires with 100 shot does hit pretty hard. Depends on how low you spray. The lower the rpms the more tq it will make and harder it will hit.
With a 100 shot you can pretty much forget spraying from a stop on street tires. Even @ 50mph it was still enough to get some wheel hop/spin in my car with just long tubes.
It is a rush because you are adding that much more power than you are not normally used to. But street use I don't see n20 as very practical. Yes I have sprayed down on ramps and stuff to play with it, but because of low speed traction limitations and high speed limitations due to law enforcement, I have never seen more than 2-3 seconds of spray on the street. A rush yes, but if it was only a street car I would much rather have a blower.
Oh and as far as price, a new n20 kit with all the safety stuff can easily run you $1k+. Then figure $30-$60 each bottle fill (I know people that fill theres once a week) n20 really gets expensive in the long run.
Yes there is a huge initial tq spike and the 100hp increase is almost instant.

hmm..as far as expense, a blower is going to run me at least 3500 for a new kit, + a crapload for install and tuning..and i'd probably looking at a $5000 investment overall. I would also assume that the power levels would be similar with my setup..probably 450 or so at the wheels with a low boost setting, and traction/control would again be an issue on the street.
Since this car isnt my daily driver, i'd probably just throw on the stickiest tires I can legally run when i take it out.
I am probably going to have to make a thread about the best street suspension/traction setup for high horsepower cars also.

The second time I was in a nitrous fed car was a 383 LT1 on a 200 shot. It was like a kick to the chest! You will feel definitely feel a 100 shot on an LT1hehehehe

i just dont think i can justify spending $5K-$6K on a supercharger/turbo setup that is probably going to blow up anyway. i think for the $$ nitrous is the best way to go for me.
Re: Nitrous, your opinion..
Nitrous is definitely the best bang for the buck and stock LT1's seem to take up to a 150hp no problem as long as they are installed properly, keep in good working order, and used correctly. If I had ridden in a nitrous'd car prior to going for a ride in a blown car I DEFINITELY would have gone the nitrous route first. The jump in power is instantaneous...
Of course, you'll eventually want more...no reason to choose between one or the other...get both! ;-)

How many miles on bottom end?

The car is shifting at approximately 6300-6400 rpms. I think its like ~86K miles on the bottom end. Non-daily driver, and don't really beat on it. Everything on the engine top-end has been freshened up with pretty solid parts. Tranny is stock(except for stall), and so is rear. I'm sure ill have to replace them one at a time as well.
