Nitrous Questions

Is this reasonable?
OK...I have a guy installing a "customized" NX kit on my 02 Z28 currently. He is doing it for $800 with me providing the bottle. The guy has proven to be capable with other friends rides, so I am trusting his word that I do not "need" certain safety items with my setup.

He has kinda given me the vibe that I shouldn't worry about what's on "the boards", but I can't help but wonder why people use all these items that I don't have being installed on mine.
Things like:

Fuel pump
Fuel pressure safety switch
Window switch
Bottle warmer

What do you say about a wet 100 shot on a stock internals motor with just noids, lines, purge, and a blowdown?

In your opinion, is there anything special that is a must to keep the engine healthy? Is there anything you would not want to run nitrous without?

Thanks alot...Just don't want to say I wish I would have (fill in the blank)...

I'm no nitrous guru but IMO...you probably don't need to worry about upgrading the stock fuel system w/ just a 100 shot.

However, I personally would not run N2O w/o a window switch. A window switch is pretty important, as I don't think it would be a very good idea to accidentally spray at say, 2000 rpms (or lower).

Do you have an A4 or M6? If it's an M6, another reason for a window switch would be that you want it to shut off before you shift (unless you power shift, stay WOT) because if you're still spaying when the TB blade closes, I think there's a pretty good chance of a nitrous backfire.

A FP safety switch is also a good idea IMO because you don't ever want to go lean when spraying...and then continue to spray.

A bottle heater is nice too but certainly not a must. Without one though, you'll probably end up like some of my friends that have to heat the bottle with a torch before they race. It's kinda a PITA and not exactly safe either.

Like I said though, I'm no expert on nitrous.

I just put a TNT wet kit on my 2002 z28 and here are my thougts (not an expert opinion by any means):

Fuel pump- Don't need it if you stay at a 100 shot

FPSS - Not necessary but for $35 it gave me piece of mind

Window switch - Not absolutely needed but a very good idea. It will prevent you from accidentally spraying at too low of an RPM and it will stop the system from spraying before the rev limiter hits (hitting the rev limiter on N2o often means new motor). In the very least it will make it easier on your tranny (M6 or A4).

Bottle warmer- This will make life much easier but it is not needed. You can warm the bottle in a bathtub before you go out (safe way) or you can risk ruining the bottle with a torch (not safe). It is nice to be able to flip a switch and then have your bottle pressure automatically regulated. Wet kits should only be used at the bottle pressure they were rated for.

Also, you may have got some good advice about being skeptical of what you hear on "the boards". I always try to get as much info as possible and then decide what is true.

Check out the N2O section for more info

Good luck you will love the gas

Thanks fellas!

Regarding the window switch and the rev limiter. I found that after an LS1 edit on my RPM limit/shift points. I was hitting the rev limiter @ WOT @ the top of 2nd.

The guy doing the work on my car has not been able to duplicate this. If I were to tell him where I want the rev limiter/shift points set on an A4, what would you suggest?

Anyone???

You really need a bottle warmer.. thats a given.. no nitrous pressure means no power

Personally I wouldn't run a nitrous system without a FPSS and a window switch. They're too cheap to ignore, and they can save your motor. I presume your installer will put them in if you ask, and that's what I'd do.

Nothing wrong with getting multiple opinions I guess, but in this case it sort of seems similar to telling you that you don't need a helmet, because "how many people really crash running the 1/4-mile, anyway?". Safety devices are an insurance policy, and will always look like a waste of time and money. Until you need them.
