Was going to get nitrous, having second thoughts.
Well, I was all set to get a Nitrous kit but now I am thinking against it. I used to read about it a decent bit and then I decided to take the plunge but then I started reading some threads about nitrous again and I have to say that I am pretty scared about putting it on my engine. I was going to buy an NX wet kit with all the goodies and safty switches and plan on never running more than 100 shot. Now people are saying that your engine won't last too long and plan for a rebuild soon. This car is my daily driver and I am in college and can't really afford a rebuild. I thought, if done right, everything would be fine as long as I didn't go with a real big shot. I thought the stock pump would be good for a wet setup but I have seen posts to the contrary. Also, the whole timing retard thing. Now I am not sure what to do. Maybe I will worry a lot less if I went with the 50 or 75. I guess I don't know as much as I thought about the subject. What should i do? Thanks.
Well there is a saying I once heard... "If you cant afford a rebuild then dont put N2O on your car"
Now that being said and I am going to get flamed for this...
I bought a Venom system for my car. If it starts to run lean it will shut the N2O off thus saving your engine. Its a dry kit but I am sure you know about it if you have been reading up. I am a happy customer and I have missed shifts and it shut the N2O off, I hit the rev limiter and it shut the N2O off. Pretty damn safe if you ask me, and I paid $650 for mine new.
But if you are scared you are going to blow your motor then its best not to spray. Cause if you pop it, thats it. Even with all the saftey features $hit can still happen. Maybe that $5-600 would be better spent on heads or somthing?

As long as you have all the safety stuff for the car, keep the system in good working order (checking solenoids every now and again, making sure the plugs are good, etc.), and don't run over a 150 shot....all should be well on a stock shortblock. I've ran the bottle for a few years on my car, and it still has the stock shortblock. I was running 150 shot when she was still my daily driver.
My bigger worry would be breaking driveline parts, not blowing up the motor (again, as long as you do it correctly).
ACTUALLY the saying goes "If you are running a blower because you can't afford a rebuild for more power...you are taking the shortest route to a rebuild"
I know because I coined it in the Blower section in 98
Juice is where it is at...do not get greedy and keep up on the system.
400RWHP and 420RWTQ N/A AND a 150 shot!
all on a stock short block

Well
You can go with 125 hp shot and no problems on a stcok blokc. Just don't turn it on below 3000 RPM run safety switches and enjoy the added power. If you want a complete dummy system get Zex that is hit a button a romp on it. I've seen imports run those with 100 and 75 shot no problems.
I think I will go ahead and get it but stick to no more than a 75 shot for awhile until I am comfortable with the whole thing. I am sure my friends will call me weak for going with a small shot but who cares.
SNEAKY NIEL-
when people say "rebuild", that can mean a few different things. my take on the subject is this, you WILL indeed need to plan on "freshening up" the motor, or doing a minor rebuild, eventually. no, you may not blow up your motor, or ever have any other major problems. BUT, n2o puts more stress on the internals and seals/rings/etc that will need to be replaced eventually. thats not to say you wont go 1-2 years or more before needing to do this, or you might need it your first year out. alot depends on how often and how much you spray.
everyone who uses n2o SHOULD know this, i know i do, and now you do too.
