To make it simple "YES". Its been said over and over, $75 for the window switch is cheaper than a motor rebuild. I use 3000-5800 on my car, but its an M6..really the cut off rpm is your preference just do it so you dont hit rev limit. rev limit and spray can cause a big problem from what i hear.

Depends on how high your converter stalls.

In asnwer to your question,no you really dont need 1. Is it recomended? yes it is. Do I run 1? no i dont.
I spray through shifts with my built a4. I sprayed through with my stocker but it didnt last all that long.
Most guys seem to be happy with the window switch,as it lets the trans last a good bit longer unless you have a very strong trans (not stock).
