The way I look at it is if you are try9ing to hide the whole kit then yea the sneaky approaches are nice or if you are going with the stock uncut theme. I personally like the locking switches and buttons kinda like a cockpit you know what I mean.

Well I do some racing here and there and I like to keep people guessing why the car is so quick, a button just gives it away right there. I have an arming switch in the ashtray and a button on the side of the wheel right now, but I'd like to toy with the steering wheel button switches. The only thing is that the wires are so small I'd be afraid of running too much power through it and possibly burning it up.

Use a relay...and I also believe there is a company that supplies an interface that allows you to use the steering wheel controls for other functions. I just can't recall the name at the moment.
