Alternative to Mallory 685 box

I am getting ready to install my nitrous kit and was originally planning on installing the Mallory 685 box, but it just looks like it is going to be a major hassle to get it mounted in the engine compartment and I do not want to put it inside the car. My question is could I get away with just buying a MSD digital window switch and an MSD timing retard box to get the same effect? I also have my timing advanced a few degrees via a mail order tune from madz28.com So if I have the timing retard box, could I wire it up to just kick back some timing when the nitrous is being sprayed? Thanks for any help offered.

No, it won't do the same thing doing that, but you WILL get the basic functions you want anyway. The Mallory 685 has:

2 different rev-limiters that are SPARK based, not fuel based like the PCM. Fuel based rev limiters can cause a momentary lean condition. The 2nd limiter could be used for a staging limiter, so you can 'stall up' and auto car or whatever.

1 window switch

1 timing retard that's engaged by sending 12v to a wire on the box, it's adjustable too.

1 start retard so you can retard the spark during cranking

1 tack output

1 boost retard

1 map sensor integration

It's also a multispart ignition box, so you get better low-mid RPM performance.

But doing what you mentioned will give you the timing retard and window switch functions.

I put mine between the air filter and fender on the driver's side. Pro- I can see the LED display and have easy access to it. Con- dust and rain have already collected on it because you can see the damn thing straight down when the hood is closed. I must design some kind of enclosure but it's too damn cramped in there.

I see you have the Moroso CAI as well... so the box fits pretty well in there then? Would you happen to have an installed pic?

Which intake system do you have? Does that wedge pretty well in between the two. Also, if it is trapped between the intake, will it cause the box to overheat?

Would you happen to have a picture of your custom intake installed? All of this trouble for an ignition box.

Re: Alternative to Mallory 685 box

I will take one later on tonight and post it up. There is enough room to manipulate the buttons, etc. Of course, it will take more effort to see the display than if it was in the glovebox...

Re: Alternative to Mallory 685 box

This question is unrelated to mounting of the box, but since there seems to be an number of ppl who own the mallory 685 in this thread, can anybody tell me if the settings that you have programmed in are saved in the event that you disconnect the battery? Im just wondering if I have to put in my rev limit, window settings etc every time the battery is pulled.

Re: Alternative to Mallory 685 box

I've disconnected my battery a few times and it has always remembered its settings. I have'nt had it disconnected for long periods of time so I don't know if it would reset after a long time or not.
