1st incident with carbed nitrous setup.
1st incident with carbed nitrous setup.
I know most of you guys are Fulie gooroos but hoping you can help out a carb guy.
Im pretty much a noob when it comes to running the bottle but have had great success over the last 5-6 bottles. I recently had a pretty serious nitrous pop that basicly destroyed my nice Chuck Nuytten carb(not one butterfly was left attached to the rod, scored all 4 venturies). Prior to this day I had not ran my car in a few weeks so I checked my fuel pressure flowing the plate as I have in the past. I THOUGHT I set it to 5.75 pounds for 125 Hp jets. The kit is a nitrous works billet atomizer. 125 to 300.
After the BOOM, I was checking the damage at home and rechecked my FP flowing....... wow... almost 8PSI flowing through the plate.
My question is.... can too much fuel pressure cause a Nitrous backfire. The only other thing I can think of it spark scatter... I run a solid roller and the bronze gear was pretty wore.
It was 95 that day do bottle pressure was up... did not even need a warmer.
I run a dead headed system and know I have pressure creep because of that. Thats why I check my FP flowing. I was running 37 timing locked. I run 40 on the engine.

PS anyone have a 800 cfm+ carb for sale.

All extra fuel will do is drop a little power and add a cushin. make sure you have a nitrous filter befor the "sillynoid" (trash could have caused it to stick open) I would also check to see "if" it is stuck open or leaking by turning the bottle on, taping the microswithch to get nitrous to it, and placing the end of the line going to the plate "or fogers" in a contaner of water. this should find the problem if the "boom" hapened when you started the car "this boom is caused by starting the car with raw nitrous in the intake. the other cause could be a problem with the fuel "sillynoid" shuting off due to an electricle problem (either leading to or at) or trash pluging it up. at any rate, check, then double, and triple check everything in the system. As for fuel press. i run myn at 7PSI, just to be safe.
Re: 1st incident with carbed nitrous setup.
I apreciate the info. I should have been a little more specific as to when the Boom happened. It happened at the track as soon as the NOS Hit.
I do think I may have found part of the problem. I believe my warn Bronze gear may have had timing off by as much as 1-2 degrees.I have check everything else there is to check.....??. I have checked everything from a lag in fuel to the solenoid not opening.
I just ordered comp cams new high tech plastic gear. Im hoping that was the problem.

Re: 1st incident with carbed nitrous setup.
When and what you did when this happened will help with a diagnosis...It's possible you engaged the system and had ONLY the fuel solenoid open, dumping big fuel and yes...It will ignite and go wherever it wants(thru your carb is easy enough). I've seen this happen to a few cars. Sometimes the hood even leaves the car. Trashing the intake plumbing on an EFI car sucks but does happen too.
How did the car run on the first 5 bottles? Share some times!
Everyone likes to see numbers
I'm no expert but others are and they'll chime in. My plan when I get more hood room is to run a better nitrous plate WITH burst plates. HVH makes some slick ones I think, check them out man and Goodluck.

Re: 1st incident with carbed nitrous setup.
Thanks for the replies and help....
The car runs a pretty consistant 11.99 to 12.10 @115on the engine and has run as quick as 10.78@128 on the gas with little tuning.6.85 1/8@101. Short times range in the 1.55 to 1.60 and has been as quck as 1.52. This was on 125 Hp jets. This is an aluminum headed, flat top 355 on 93. I hope the 93 octane did not bite me.
Im running a nitrous works plate system 125-300. Im running a dedicated nitrous fuel system:1/2 line, blue pump, fram filter,to holley reg,to -4an line to small filter, purge, solenoid. I run the system off of a microswitch that turns on both solenoids. I usually run right at 5.75 to 6psi of FP flowing through the plate.
I run a 9" 4000 stall(approx) that flashes to about 3500 at the stab of the gas. So with that said I stall it up at about 2500 and nail it on green...... flashes to about 4300 on the bottle.
On the motor I basicly take off from just off idle. Et's a little better.
I went back last night and watched the video again, again and again(each time was more depressing) anyway, It sounds like from the video that I did not stall it up for the nitrous pass. My guess is it engauged at too low rpm.. and Boom.
Its funny too because the whole way to the track that day I had a BAD feeling. Should have listened ......
96Z28SS.... they are nice carbs and not too bad 2nd handed.
