NV smog laws

I have no idea what Nevada's smog laws are like and I am curious if I can have a CC306 or a comperable cam in Reno or LV. Can I do that or are the laws horrible? I am in CA right now but might be registering a car there because I will be spending a bunch of time in the Reno and Las Vegas areas. Just curious what you NV people are able to do.

Thanks, I looked at the site and they said they do a 2 stage tail pipe test. One at idle one at 2500rpm. Not as tough as CA but close.

Stupid west coast and all the tree huggers, I am so jealous of Texas and other midwestern car owners.

The CC 306 is too big of a cam for a street car IMO. I have the GM hotcam and it runs great, but still not even a stock idle. It passed CA emissions with the ati blower and flp longtubes and all. I would go as mild on the cam as possible, it will help driveablility.
Crane Cams has a nice one, go look at their website. I think it is the 2050 cam, it is 50 state legal. Very similar to the hotcam, but less exhaust duration and a 116 LSA vs a 112 LSA, that would give it a better idle.

You passed with all of that? That is incredible. My freind just got hassled because he had a flow master cat-back. I was shocked. How did they pass the FLP headers, I know they have a cat option but I thought it still moved the cats to a different place than stock, thus breaking the cat law. Did you have a "freindly" shop? Were your levels close to the maximum with the blower, cam and long tubes or ??? I just didn't know it could be done. Thanks.

To tell you the truth, I really took a gamble. I basically thought the same as you, it couldn't be done. The smog guy I went to was a "test only" station, they do not make repairs here. The first time I brought the car in it had edelbrock headers, and flowmaster muffler. It failed big time, in fact a gross polluter. The next round I reprogrammed it back to stock and some other stuff, it almost passed, but it did not. I knew something was wrong, so I took the cat-converter off and it was toast. There was only one small brick left in it, and it was rotated 90 degrees. This is the third cat I have toasted. At that time I had ordered the Arizona Speed and Marine headers but they never came in after 3 months of waiting I decided to go ***** out and get the flp's. The air tubes were hooked up as well as egr, but I left the egr plugged at the manifold. Well, the results from the flp's were pretty amazing. It ran the cleanest it ever has, and also the fastest it ever has. I've left in the stock programming too because it still runs really good and I do not want to damage the cat converters again.

That is amazing! Did they hassle you at all about the headers? If they didnt, then I know what the next mod is. What LSA is your hot cam if it is a custom grind? How does the blower respond to it?

I didn't realize you could get so much done and still pass. I have heard of just cam and head guys getting failed (I think it was a really agressive cam). I just wanted to make power and I thought I was going to be forced to go N2O because of smog but if I can go with a built 355 with a blower, then that is great.

Thanks, you brought faith back to me.

tireburnin,
What year car do you have? If you have an OBD 2 car, basically 1996 and up, it is much more of a PITA to modify it. Both ATI and Vortech have blower kits that are 50 state legal for the LT1. I know the P600B & kit is 50 state legal because I have seen the EO number on the state web site, www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/aftermkt.htm#ca If you get the blower kit and a mild camshaft (I would get even a milder one than the hotcam or even keep the stocker), ported heads, and built bottom end with forged pistons, you can make serious power, and still be street legal. Technically the flp's are not legal, but man they sure cleaned up that motor and gave it great power, that is for sure. The guy didn't hassle me at all, and if some guy does hassle you, just leave his facility and have someone else test it, you have the right to go wherever you want. Another bit of advice if you do run a motor like this, keep everything in order and connected because you could get pulled over by the cops at any time. All my connections are intact. There are guys down here running with no cats and longtubes, that is nuts and they are asking for it.

I have a 94 so it will be a lot easier for me. Thanks a bunch for all of the help. I guess if I am legal in SD then I will be legal in Nevada because our laws are way tuffer than thiers. Reading your posts changed where my buildup is heading. Thanks again and if/when I go the blower route, expect to hear from me again .

Allright, well glad to help! Let me know how your car turns out. Do it right the first time and build the bottom end first, that way it will not break. I built mine using the stock crank, 2 bolt mains, but heavy duty h-beam rods and good pistons. I would recommend building it this way because my motor has been bullet proof since I built it 3 years ago. If you could muster an extra $1000 you could install a forged crank and splayed 4-bolt mains, I couldn't afford it at the time but I would do it now. Those will keep the crank in its place no matter what rpm you run, I keep my rev limit at 6200. Your going to have more power than you ever imagined when you bolt on that blower.
