Need a shop to build a custom cage?
Re: Need a shop to build a custom cage?
A 6-point unit would technically be called a "roll bar" rather than a "cage." The difference in cost is substantial. Be sure that the design you pay for is congruent with the specs on page 210 of the 2006 NHRA Rulebook. There are descriptions of what needs to be included in the design if you have frame connectors or don't have them. A swing-out side bar is also very convenient.
A local shop that does a lot of NHRA and PSCA chassis work is PMR Racecars on Arrow Highway in Montclair. PMR built my complete 4th generation F-body Super Stock chassis. I'm in Covina if you'd like to see a sample of their work.
Phil Mandella's phone number at PMR is (909) 621-5531.
Good luck

Re: Need a shop to build a custom cage?
Thanks for the info. What kind of setup did they do for your vehicle? Also what kind of pricing would I be looking at? and turn around time?
Thanks.
Thanks.
Re: Need a shop to build a custom cage?
My car has a full cage, full tubs, aftermarket disc brakes, 9" Ford housing, etc. but then, we built the entire car there over the period of a year. The chassis is certified for E.T.'s as low as 8.50 and would only require a minimum upgrade to be certified for 7.50. It sounds as if you are looking for the roll bar instead of a cage.
The price would depend on the material used and the cost of materials fluctuates with the price of steel. Some people are willing to sacrifice the lower weight for a cheaper price by using mild steel. Most of the NHRA stock/super stock cars are built using chromemoly tubing. The time factor will depend on the backlog of work at the shop. I don't want to throw out any numbers for either cost or timeline because I'm not there every day and I don't know exactly what the situation looks like. The best thing do do is wait for Phil to come back from the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis right after Labor Day.
