Whats the going rate for a shorty/mid length header install? A while back I went to a muffler shop and they said itd be around 250. Does that sound about right?

I don't know what the going rate is but if they said 250 they probably never did an F-body Lt1 before. Just make sure they guarantee their work such as any leaks, burnt wires etc...

Why would you not doit yourself?

I would, but it seems a bit too complex for me.

It's easy. The only thing i wouldnt recommend is doing LT headers.

You should be looking at around $500 - $700 to do the job. $250 is way to cheap. They will either do a very crappy job or they have never done them before on a fbody and will try to charge you more later. I would just do them myself. Its not really that hard just sort of time consuming.

Where are you at? What headers? $250-$500 is the normal price I have seen. They only call for 5 hours. The shop I worked at charged $250 for shorties and $400 for LTs. They are easy to install. Don't listen to wantafast, he is just a pansy.

Definitely do them yourself. I give a lot of credit to members who wrench on their own cars instead of paying someone to do it. Just set aside one full day to do it.....a day where you know the local auto parts store is open, just in case.

FWIW,

I paid $400 out the door for my SLP's to be installed. That included installation and a custom y-pipe welded to my liking.

If I knew what I know now I would have saved the CA$H.

Where you located?

I did my Edelbrocks in 4 hours. The steering column is very easy to set-aside. I had the front end supported with safety jacks. But since your car has never had the exhaust removed, the exhaust bolts have a tendency to be electrolosyzed to the heads. In other words, there is the chance you can strip/twist off a bolt in the head. Even before you take it to the exhaust shop, spray Deep Creep or some bolt removing penetrant a few times a day for two days... The shop will just strip the bolts and charge you for the repair... may even charge you to remove the heads if they can't access the bolt.

Just a chance, but whether you take it to a shop or do it yourself, spray some Deep Creep/WD-40 etc on the header bolts.
