my g/f is moving out there to live with her sister who is loaded, unlike her deadbeat father. It sucks that she's leaving as we've just been getting closer (only going out for a few months) but i'm not gonna stand in her way of a better lifestyle. I was just wondering how that area is in terms of things to do, scenery, weather, safety, and so on. She's 17 so take that into consideration with some of the things like stuff to do. thanks
Flagstaff is a relatively small town located in North Central Arizona at the gateway to the Grand Canyon, the junction of I40 and I17. The area is very scenic with lots of evergreen trees along the Interstate and adjacent mountain sides. There is a considerable volume of tourist traffic in the summer when the Canyon is open to visitors. The summer weather is cool due to the high altitude. Many times, when I've passed through there are late afternoon thunderstorms during the summer months. Winter weather includes a considerable amount of snow and I've even been stranded there by icy conditions on I40 a couple of occasions.
The social life will be somewhat restricted by the remoteness of the area. It's a long way to Phoenix on the south, Albuquerque on the east or Las Vegas on the west. In totality, Flagstaff is a very attractive location with the exception of cold winters and isolation from big city attractions. On the other hand, those might be considered advantages by some.
You will probably want to visit and you might really like it there.
Good luck

Fireman,
Certainly an excellent point! Small towns that are home to universities or colleges do offer some unique possibilities. I should have remembered that, having benefitted from those conditions during my own college days.

Flagstaff will be enjoyed by people who likes the outdoors... You can think of every possible outdoor activity, and flagstaff can offer it for you....
If you enjoy the City life of car horns blowing, sirens whistling by ,the smell of smog, bar hopping, club hopping... Flagstaff is not for you..
They also have the 4 seaons (sort of) that phoenix doesn't have...

Flag is great, if you can put up with the ongoing granola freak show. Beautiful mountains and pine trees. Lots of tourists during the summer and skiers galore as soon as Snowbowl opens up.
Being that she is only 17 it will leave her out of the killer night life that exists up there. The good thing is it's only 2 hours to Phoenix if she gets really bored.
As far as NAU, well let's just say I had 4 good friends go to college there. They all went up normal 18 y/old kids. 3 came back for rehab. Guess the winter is a bit on the boring side for some.
