Post California sucks...

California sucks when it comes to smog regulations. I want to get longtubes and all kinds of good **** but Ive been told I won't pass smog. What do all you guys with strokers or heads/cam cars do? Just run shorties and give up a bunch of power?

Yep, we just run all smog-legal parts. Its possible to make tons of horsepower and still be smog legal for CA. Or you can cheat as described above, if you can find a smog tech like that.

Speaking of California emissions. I would like to do several modifications to my car, lid, cat-back, headers, suspension, etc. and still be smog legal.

My question concerns lids and long tube headers. I know K&N FIPK is CARB certified, but are there any others which are also certified in California. Last I heard long tube headers were not smog legal in California. Is this true? If not which long tube headers are the exception.

I have a '98 Z28 LS1

Thanks

I dont think you can get an long tube headers that are smog legal in Cali. I just got some Jet Hot SLP 1 3/4 + Y Pipe for $500 shipped from a guy on this board though so Im happy. I would have preferred some Hooker LTs but Im not about to move to another state so I can get some headers.

Go to each manufacturer's website, look at their online catalog, and look and see if their parts are 50-state legal. They will almost always list it right next to the part.

All these smog laws for cars but all the smog is caused by all the SUV's and commercial trucks. Today most of Cali is in the unheathy zone. Looks like Mars outside.

You can pass the smog test w/long tubes and whatever else if you find the right shop and have all the hookups, egr, air, etc. I just passed a few months ago with the flp's, the motor was putting out less emissions than when it was stock!

Speaking of the K&N FIPK being CARB certified I posted this in the lounge 2 days ago might as well post it here for the locals too see. Anyways heres the story. I take my car in and it passes everything except the visual inspection. First he says my valve cover breather is illegal, no big deal I said, I'll put the regular cap back on. At which point he says thats not all. He then states that my Granatelli MAF is for a ford! I said the Ford MAF sensors look NOTHING like the GM ones and he said he doesn't care mine is for a Ford. What a freakin moron! Then he said my K&N FIPK is illegal. I said on K&N's website is says that it is CARB approved and 50 state legal. He says no it is illegal because you have a open cone filter. Anyways Im just gonna put my stock stuff back on for a day test and pass. I also emailed K&N because of what this guy said and they said open cone filters are illegal unless used in conjunction with there approved FIPK kit. They said if I would have just stock a filter onto my stock airbox then that would be illegal, but my FIPK is not. Oh well I dont want to fail again so Im not gonna take a chance.
