Windshield removal for roll cage install?

I've been advised to remove the windshield for install of a full cage, if for no other reason than to make painting easier. I was wondering where everyone went to have this done? I talked to Henderson Glass because they're right around the corner and are supposed to be good, and the will not guaruntee that they won't break it, nor will they hang on to it for me. In addition to this, they won't do it anywhere but in their shop (ie no onsite removal).

They told me that no one will guaruntee that they won't break it and if they do they're lying. I've come to accept this. But my main concerns are the other two. I have no where to store this thing, and it was my understanding that you had to be careful with it so as not to get finger oils on the edges and so that you don't break/mar it. Also, the car has no engine in it, so it would probably be more hassle than it's worth to load it up and trailer it to their shop for the two hours it will take them to do this, especially since they're literally less than a mile away.

How did everyone else go about this, and who did they have do the work?

Low Price Glass on Dequindre in Madison Hgts or Hazel Park (can't remember off hand) will come out, take out your glass, then come back and re-install it. Not sure on a price, you'd have to call them but they are LOW PRICE and good quality.

Re: Windshield removal for roll cage install?

we use LAIRDS glass at my dealership for everything. they are a great bunch of guys and do onsite installs. Im sure they wouldnt have any problem taking it out and comeing back later to reinstall it. there main shop is in farmington hills on grand river near 10mi. but they have other stores elsewhere. not sure where. if you want, you can call my cell and I'll get the # for you or you can just call information Im sure. I dont think anyone will garauntee it will not break either. they are very fragile when not on the car, and when you cut it free and try to lift it, thats when the chance is there to break it. no need to be too worried about betting finger oils on it, cause the clean it before setting it down/on. they prolly wont take it with them either to store it, but Im sure they can help you set it up out of the way so its safe. I dont see why you cant set it outside while your geting your cage put in. but you can ask them about that.

Why not paint the front upper part before installation. Buy one of those little sprayers with the small glass jar attached. Have a pint of paint mixed up and thinned. Spray the parts that show through the windshield prior to installation. Problem solved for under $10. I've bought those little sprayers at an auto parts store for about that much, IIRC.

Seems like it would save alot of f u c k i n g around.

How much is it costing to get the cage done and how much for the window in and out! My buddy did my cage in the car and painted it without the window taken out! I have the full halo and knee bar in my camaro! he is cheaper and does a better job than most places! Hes busy all the time though, but might be able to squeeze you in! let me know the pricing and he should be able to beat it easily!

Re: Windshield removal for roll cage install?

I'm getting a good deal on a very high quality cage, that part is out of the way. They also said they could weld it just fine without it removed, and yes I could paint it outside of the car if I have to. Taner recommended to me that I remove the windshield just to ensure that it's done right and welded properly, and I agree with him if it doesn't turn into a large hassle. Otherwise I'll probably just cave in and do it how it is. It all comes down to there is a best way to do things, and I'm of the nature to do things right the first time so I don't regret it later on down the road. Already dealt with that too many times.

As far as the spray guns, I've got that covered.

Yep it will be easier for the guy installing the cage without the glass in.
Who'd you go with on the job?

Stenod's hookin me up with a completed cage along with some other minor fabrication items. I've met Joe and Steve in the past, and judging by character I feel safe in having them responsible for my car, not to mention the awesome job they've done on Harlan's car. Price is right as well.

Re: Windshield removal for roll cage install?

Jim,

I had to remove my windsheild for all of the welding done to the halo (just to get as much welded as possible) and then the painting.

I had someone come to the shop to pull the windsheild and then come to my house with the glass and put it back in. I am sure that we do it over here in little bitty Canada then you'll find somone there too.

Hmm, planning on going fast are you?

Good luck,

Roman

Re: Windshield removal for roll cage install?

lol, the funny thing is Chris that it's the other way around. NHRA went to 11.49 for a 6-point, IHRA implemented t-tops need full cage at 10.99. Go figure.

BTW, Milan and Norwalk are IHRA. Stanton is NHRA iirc. All the close ones are bending us over. I'll be needing a cage anyways though, so it doesn't bother me as much as it would have a year ago. It does suck for a lot of people though, and I'd be pissed if I had a 10sec car, especially after I installed my 8pt last year thinking it would be enough for 10's where my car was supposed to be at the time.

Not if you bought a Hardtop like I did.
