Unhappy when winter projects go bad......

Ok my engine build up (350) for my 89 gta is done (kinda).

Ok... Good news. The car runs (badly). Bad news, #2 cylinder has a bent exhuast valve !!! . WHy??? Dunno. started it up and it was missing, so I relashed the valves and when I got to #2 exhaust the pushrod was bent. After more inspection I found the valve is siezed in the hole and wont go up or down. Im very bummed about this. Im going to talk to my Tech friends at work but I cant see how I will be able to get around pulling the intake and head..... These heads were redone by a freind and the valve moved up and down when they went int (I was there when the valve seats were cut and the valves were put in).

This sux.

Im reallllllly getting tired of this (little) project.

I feel your pain. The last 3 years my car hasnt come out until July because of projects not getting finished. Add another year to the tally because my Iroc has a long way to go and I dont have a minute to spare on it. ARRRGG! Just stick with it.

Man that sucks bigtime

I wonder what could have caused that? Maybe you needed pushrod guideplates? Self aligning rockers? I dunno but hope you figure it all out soon.

Unhappy

dan, sorry to hear of your misfortune. as for why it may have seized, I have a few ideas. one, it may have been bent slightly to begin with. two, the valve guide was too tight wo when you started it up, it quickly overheated the valve and siezed it in there. three, overtightened the valve when adj. the lash initially.

when you do take off the head, (no way around it)make sure there arent any contact marks on the piston.

are these aftermarket heads? if not, were these heads on a running eng. before you got them? replacement valves? what all were done to the heads? did you check piston-to-valve clearance?

good luck

the aftermath

Im in ignor the GTA mode now. I may futz with it sunday, But Ive had enough for now. Im betting on the over lash as the lifter were dry and I was running it for 5 min at 2000 RPm then relashing rinse and repeat...... for 20 min of running time. I believe I lost the valve on the second go round. The valves are new and the heads came off a running engine. The valve guides were replaced with sleaves. I will check hte piston and hope no damage was done other than the valve. To reiterate.

Yeah, they went up and down when the valve went in the head, but did they ALL go up and down when there was a piston in the hole.

OBVIOUSLY not or at least not for long! You musta clipped the #2 piston and the more you ran it, the more you ate up the valve stem hole!!

SORRY BUDDY!!!

Hey Guys, New User to the forum and I had to chime in for this one. Im mostly just a Camaro enthusiast, my 68 was destroyed by a poor body shop choice.

Sorry to hear about the head, but you can look on the bright side. My current project has a big block chevy and after working on my car for 2 years, the engine/trans was FINALLY ready to go into the car for good. Rolled the motor over on the stand to change the pan, and then I notice the crack on the bottom of the block.

Well my winter project is finally going back together. Too bad it's last winter's project still. New engine is still on the stand (probably has rust growing inside it), tranny is still in 1000 pieces, front suspension is just starting to go back in (actually have the strut assemblies in with tie rods), fuel tank is still waiting on being sumped, rear end is waiting on gas tank to go back in, interior is somewhat together, I still need wheel spacers to use the Simmons rims, I still need to order my SS hood, and I don't have a penny to spend on any of it. I can't remember what it's like to drive my car. I really miss it.
