Tranny Valve Body, What Does It Do?

My car is in the shop because my tranny has been acting funny. They are starting by replacing the valve body and the pressure switch. Can anyone give me a basic explanation of what the Valve body does in the trans? Can this cause slipage?

Thanks,

hey bill, glad to hear your car is finally geting taken care of. hopefully. the valve body is made up of fluid channels and valves that direct fluid press. at the diff. cluthes/bands. the manual valve is the master, so when you place the shifter in a gear, the cable moves the manual valve in the valve body into a specific position, that in turn uncovers channels and allows pressurized tranny fluid into that channel to act upon whatever clutch/band/switch is being activated. as the trans gets older, the valves will sometimes become sticky, stuck, or clogged not letting the fluid do what it is intended to do. and there are springs that are attached to or pushing on the valves that will sometimes break. on top of all that, there are elec. switches and solenoids that the vcm controls to direct fluid/valves also. that also can cause these prob.s. so, if a channel has a problem, and doesnt allow full fluid flow through it, or maybe isnt sealing off pressure as its supposed to, thats how the clutches can slip. I like there idea of replaceing the whole valve body/manual valve sensor at once, its one easy step that will let them either fix it, or count a good portion of the poss.s out at least.

good luck and let us know how it turns out.

oh yeah, and your trans go shift kit is in the valve body. ask for the valve body back if you can get it back. there might be a core charge on the valve body, dont know. but def. try to get that valve body back.

My freinds A4 car is having the same probelem. SES code says 1-2 shift solenoid or something like that. I'm wondering if its just the noid or the whole valve body assembly is jacked. It only has 13k on it.

Bill what codes (if any) did it pull up when it was acting funny?

The code I was getting is P1810. I sure hope this solves the problem. I will lose my Shift Kit since they are changing out the entire V. Body. It will be worth it if it works.

Hey Chris, thanks for all the infor I'll let you know what happens. Are you going to the track Thursday. I hope the car is done so I can go.

Im putting in urethane motor mounts and my v6 coil springs. also, I have my subframe conn.s, rear air bags, and vacuum canister sitting on the front porch. came today from summit. now i gotta get myself off this chair and go out in the garage and get back to work.

I'll Let You Know Tomorrow About My Car

Chris,

I called the dealer today and played it about the shift kit. I asked if I could have the V. Body back . The service guy said he would check on it for me. I told him I thought the car might have a shift kit in the car so I would like it back. Then I asked if his techs new anything about shift kits. He was going to talk to his tech and see if he knows anything about them or can figure it out.

These guys have been very cool. I pay under $200, extended pays $1,000. Not to bad for a new V. Body and Pressure switch.

I'll let you know. Let me know how your car goes. I hope you bring it out Thursday.
