Stay away from Doug Chevrolet in Akron, Ohio

John Elwood@ Doug Chevrolet Akron OH is a thief!!
Since taking my car to this non-service dept for a warranty replacement of the fuel pump I have learned from this scumbag that according to him the sending unit on these cars is an absolute requirement to replace with the fuel pump. This is bull**** after talking to a couple of GM reps and 2 service managers @ other shops. My car is a 94 therefore it is not a modular unit (all 1 piece, which would be covered anyhow!) but instead it is 3 pieces and the fuel pump can in fact be serviced without the sending unit.

I have placed a call to the consumer affairs dept @ GM regarding this blatant attempt @ price gouging. Not sure that it will do anything but the call is in anyhow. This service manager has instructed his band of merry thieves to push my car out into the parking lot because I declined to have the sending unit replaced and instead wanted just the pump done under warranty. He will not do this and like I said pushed the car into the parking lot for me to pick up. I've been fighting with them and the warranty company for 2 days now on this issue, I'm so pissed!.

Of course I'm going to take my car to one of the other dealers in Akron where the Service Manager actually told me that he hires Certified mechanics and not parts replacers (that was a good one) he said "Just bring it in we'll get it back on the road for ya, no sending unit needed" Now, he did tell me that if the lines on the sending unit were rusty that he would RECOMMEND that it be replaced but if I declined that was no problem. He also told me that since the sending unit comes out with the fuel pump that I could just get one and bring it to him and he'd install it. Since list on the sending unit is 329.06 and I can get it through Del for $184.27, doesn't it make much more sense to do it that way???? This ******* at Doug Chevrolet is trying to kill me with his BS.

Anyway, done ranting. Gotta call warranty company now. Remember, stay away from DOUG CHEVROLET and JOHN ELWOOD in AKRON OHIO.

I have replaced several of those over the years and can tell you about 50% of the time you can't seperate them. They rust together and when you try and seperate them it brakes both. So what happens is instead of tech explaining what could happen they try and sell the hole thing. They should have said this is what could happen and if it does then it cost this much instead of the lesser amount. The warranty company knows this and if you have the right coverage they cover it. Don't know the people you are dealing with but have been in the dealerships for over 20 years. Just my .02

I just tried calling DARKHORSE at his home and it seems that somehow the car got flat tire(s) in the parking lot, at least that is what his wife said? I am sure we will all get the details later.

The same dealership when I got the car I really did not know the car well and they charged me $300 to replace the battery and a starter wire. The battery lasted me 2 whole years before crapping out on me and I am not going to be arguing with GM how it is a faulty unit.

Wow, crazy situation indeedy. I expressed my concern over GM contacting the dealership regarding my complaint while the car was still on the lot, and low n behold when the flatbed gets there tonight to take it to another dealership for the repair, the tires flat!! I contacted GM and notified them, emailed my lawyer the pics of the car as well as GM. I also contacted the Akron Beacon Journal, Akron BBB, and just returned from the Summit County Sheriff's Dept after filing a criminal damaging report at the officers suggestion. This will be resolved tomorrow morning when GM contacts me. The mistake that Doug Chevrolet made was that they tried to force me to buy a part that they RECOMMENDED and not required. When I declined the part (Which is my choice since it's only a recommendation) they refused to honor the warranty. The GM rep contacted the dealership with me on the phone and fronted them with the GM Service Handbook that clearly states that these are 2 seperate units and CAN in fact be replaced individually and at the most, if they broke the sending unit after I declined it that was my problem not theirs. They are legally (GM legality) are not allowed to refuse warranty work. I contacted Dal @ Van Devere and was told by him that there should be no problem replacing the fuel pump without doing the sending unit. Also contacted the Service Manager at Star Chevrolet and he flat out told me "Yeah, the sending unit can get rusty and can be hard to remove the lines from BUT, in his years of being a tech and service manager he's never seen this problem with the camaro mainly due to the fact that they rarely are driven in the snow and that the lines are tucked pretty far up there. We can do this job even if you decline the sending unit" He even went so far to tell me that if I wanted to purchase a sending unit from somewhere else that he'd have no problem installing my part because he has to take it out anyway. That my friends is Service. Needless to say the car is sitting in Star's garage right now. However with the current state of the tires and any other possible hidden damage incurred @ Doug Chevrolet, I'm going to bitch to GM about scanning the car and doing a full diagnostics including leakdown and compression checks.

I just change my Fuel Pump(walbro 255lph)and my sending unit looked brand new!

I always try to keep the tank full,so that probably helps.

Good luck with your car, sorry to hear you had so much trouble, one bad dealer gives a lot of good dealers bad names.

Ihope it gets resolved to your satisfaction.
