someone tried to steal my car!

so last tuesday i was driving to work at 5:15am.....as soon as i hit 5th gear the trans let out, i coasted it up the next ramp, turning around and pushed it into a parking lot and towed it home later that day.

i parked it on the street since i decided the car was done for winter and i was going to put a motor in my van. well i ended up buying another van that needed a head gasket. so i pulled it into the garage and started to work on it friday.

so sunday the van is done and i go to pull the car in, i wanted to see what let out in the trans... i open the door to find plastic laying on the floor. some idiot peeled the side of the column and tore off the blinker lever. he must have gotten pissed he couldn't start it and took my radar detector to make himself feel better.

i don't think he got it started cuz the car was still in gear and the parking brake was still on.

now since our keys have the resistor in them, can they still peel the column or do they have to bypass the wiring somehow?? i'm assuming that's the first thing that stopped him, if he would have started it half the neighborhood would have heard it, i bet you i would have.....needless to say he wasn't going far.... lol

so now i need a new column....

damn, that sucks man. but it wont start w/o bypassing the antitheft system. lucky for you. Im guessin the car wasnt locked? that'll learn ya. just be happy he didnt get away w/it. more then likely, since he didnt get it, he was just some punk kid and prolly didnt even come close to getting it started. any car theif knows what to expect in that car. Id look for somone thats partin out a car and get a complete column. key and all. I can find out what needs to be done to relearn the new key to the theft deterent system. or, you can switch the lock cyl. from you old column if it wasnt destroyed. good luck findin a new one and sorry to hear of you loss's.

i did lock the car, my mistake was parking it on the street....

and i wish he would have got it started, cuz i would have heard it and had a chance to catch the idiot.

your right, probably some puck dumba@@. i just wish i could have caught him......

3-4 yrs ago i rebuilt a 350 buick 4barrel and put it in a 84cutlass with t tops and some idiot stole it, needless to say i'm not a happy camper...

and to boot, i suspended my insurance on it friday when i put insurance on the van..

That sucks, I remember when I had a car that got keyed and I hunted down the person who did it, made them pay and it felt good. Unfortunately I had my Jeep broken into a few weeks ago while I was at school late studying for my final exams, luckily they didn't brake the window getting into the car but they broke my center console lid off (I'm guessing they just didn't know how to open it) they stole a lot of stuff out of my Jeep including my cologne and bubble gum and all the good stuff (about $200 loss) but atleast they didn't steal my jeep and they left my school books.

You should be able to find a good column and either swap the key/lock portion or use a different one. I have bought a complete column with keys and everything for about $100 when I had my 94 camaro. Good luck.

This is one reason I am glad I live way out in the country, though we have had a bunch of people that have had their sheds broken into.

Now you got me nervous, I live just off of moross, right by you, unfortunately I'm in the D. I still have my Camaro sitting in the driveway until I can get the garage rearranged to fit it in there.

what a small world it is i live on mapleridge just off morang !...my area is what one would consider a war zone, although i live on a fairly decent block my overall neighborhood is raw. i park my car in my backyard w/ the parking brake up (even tho it aint a 6spd, it could deter some "would be" thieves), and taking the face off my radio and pressing lock at least twice is routine for me. i would buy a club but i know how easy they are to defeat, and the bulletproof brake pedal club thingy cant be seen until theyre already in the car!...and on top off all that i have two german shepards in the yard but i still worry about my car !

Damn all you guys are in my old hood.
My buddy used to live on Mapleridge up by Chalmers, his mom has pictures on the house in 1974 when the houses near it had (believe it or not) GRASS!
My other buddy lives on Worden a few houses off Morross.
I grew up on Prestwick.
Harper Woods and the whole east side, from Gratiot all the way to Harper has went to crap in the last 10/15 years.
Heck I don't think I've even been to Eastland in 10 or 12 years and even back then I would just walk into Hudsons, get what I neeeded and walk out.

There is a guy in Hamilton Ontario that sells steering column repair kits. They are actually theft repair kits that only contain the plastics that are commonly broken, springs and levers.

They sold for about $50 CDN.

I needed one for my Monte Carlo and he was willing to ship one out to me. Give him a call - it is the easier replacement.
