People w/ !cats in Michigan

Well I finally got Longtubes and an ORY on my Trans Am. Damn do I love the sound and power. Soo much fun to drive. My car is very loud as it only has a dynomax bullet on it (Lowers Sound 2-3db).

Well, my question is has anyone had any legal trouble in michigan, particularly Southeast michigan for not having catalytic converters? Ive heard it can be a pretty nasty penalty but we don't have emissions testing here and I hear from a lot of people that the cops in our area are leniant. Im a sensible driver and have driven an LT1 z28 for over a year with an open cutout without any problems.

I am a bit worried now that theres the tell tale smell and such.

Anyone have any experience?

If i get an excessive noise fix-it ticket, I would take the exhaust off my Z and close the cutout (SLP Dual/Dual) and that should definentally quiet it down enough to get signed off on.

never had any troubles with any of my cars or friends cars. unless your giving them reasons to write you up for everything in the book, they dont even look at that. only time I ever got a ticket for anything like that was when I was a stupid teenager and I had a big block 81 firebird. I reved at a cop sitting in a parking lot as I drove by thinking how cool I was. lol. so he pulled me over and had the last laugh giving me a ticket for no seat belt and excessive noise. which I got signed off by taking the car to the police station and letting them hear it and told the guy behind the desk I replaced the mufflers and its quieter now. (which was a total lie, same exh. just w/o reving it) but anways you'll be ok as long as there not trying to throw the book at you for something else you did.

to the best of my knowledge a cop cant give you a ticket for no cats. he can give you a ticket for excesive noise. Say you took the cats off and cadillac and it still had mufflers and wasnt any louder. a cop cant give you a ticket.

HOW EVER...any shop that removes a cat from a car equiped with them can be fined HEAVILY. unless the car is for "off road" use only. even though we have no testing it is illegal to remove them from any car that is to be driven on the road.

yeah, garages can get in trouble but i've never heard of a cop checking... i've been pulled over and i don't even have a muffler on my car. cop followed me through a quiet town upnorth about 9pm and i took it easy, stayed off the throttle. he pulled me over, checked me out and warned me about my temp plate not being very visable. anyhow, he never said a word about my exhaust.

i've got the edelbrock mids' into a gutted cat, 3" out the back.

moral is don't go reving your engine acting like a moron and you probably won't have problems.

Awesome, that just lightened a little load on my back. I can definentally keep it down if i see cops. I was worried that same shop penalty can be given to you just for driving without them.
So if a cop asks if i have cats, should i just be honest and say no.

If I were you, I'd be more worried about the noise. Headers into just a bullet muffler has to be LOUD.

i said an engine like this dont use cats. and i dont drive it on the street more then 100 miles a month.

I have never heard of anyone getting any hassle in Mi. for no cats.
That is usually my first mod on everything.
Really helps if you like to run AV Gas 100/130 octane
