Ontario - legality issue

I own a 1990 camaro. Lucky me i have the first year ever where they put an air bag in our cars. I was contemplating putting in a competition steering wheel in my car but my friend didnt think it would be legal. His thought process was that it cant be legal to remove any form of safety device from a vehicle there for taking a steering wheel that contains an air bag off for one that doesnt is illegal. If anyone knows wether i can change the wheel or not please post remember i am in ontario and our laws are slightly different up here.

You sure eric, I believe it is illegal to sell it like that, but I have never heard of it being illegal to remove it.

I am almost, ALMOST positive. A cop friend of mine showed me the code in his book last year. I thought it said it was illegal to tamper with a seatbelt or an airbag.

I don't think it's illegal to disable or remove the airbag in a car. The seat belt is definitely mandatory, but air bags aren't a mandatory item to begin with. Think about it, some vehicles (GM pick ups for example) have a switch to turn the airbags OFF.

I had a discussion about this a while ago with a guy who owns a body repair shop (who obviously deals with smashed up cars quite frequently) and I believe he confirmed that it's not LEGALLY necessary, but you would be obligated to inform someone who bought the car afterward.

Your correct Eric as far as it's ill legel to sell but only if the buyer is unaware of this.
The legel way to sell is if the Bag cover is branded with the word:
"INERT".... This means in operatable.
Getting a "INERT" braned/stamped/melted into a abag cover is tricky. Short of having contacts with actual "factory" race teams or having factory race support you won't get one.
.... but I have one, be sure to check the pics when the feature comes out on the Hawk down the road in GMHT.

It's I'll legel to "Operate" a car without it on public roads tho.
No way around that other than that Judist Priest song
