Thumbs up New carrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I'm plannin on getting a newer Grand Am GT soon, looking for a 99 or newer, anybody know much about these? Like what's good and what's bad about them? I know the pre 99 style Grand Am's were pieces of ****, so I don't want one of those.
Also, can you get a manual tranny with a GT? I heard only automatics were available with them, but I somehow doubt that.
Any info would be cool.

DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT get a 2.4 liter 4 cyl ,motor. They are total junk, and they are not cheap. I bet I sell at least 1 a week at work, and that is only because 1 out of 50 people actually have the 1200.00 bucks for a motor. Go with the 3.1, good motor, just watch the intake gaskets.

Gonna sell me the suburban?????

Grand Am GT had a 4 speed 4T60E transmission and the 3.4L DOCH V6 standard. Grand Am SE had 2.4 as a base and a manual was an option. You could also get the 3.1, which was only available with an auto.

Grand Am GT != Manual Transmission.

The 4 cylinder engines had alot of trouble with blown head gaskets. That is why Q is selling so many engines.

I don't know much about the older ones, but my mom has a '01 GT ram air and the car is actually fast for a FWD sedan. I heard that the '03 is available with a manual trans.

Oh and the V6's are 3400's.

ok, I can shed some light on this subject here since I work on these cars here everyday all day. I work at a pont. dealership. the head gaskets do go out on the 4 cyl.s, but thats a problem w/lots of 4 cyl. cars, not just the 2.4L. and there's no need to replace the eng. cause the headgasket blows, its not that bad of a deal. I believe its around 4 hours to replace the headgasket (but Im not a heavy tech, I do everything else, almost). and as for the power, yes they are slow. now the 3.4L is really peppy. definatly fast enough for a front wheel drive daily driver. they turn pretty good and feel solid at all speeds. the 3.4L eng.s will get intake mann. gasket leaks. that job pays around 6 hours, but still not that big of a deal. they stay pretty rattle-less and dont have really any other problems then the coolant leaks described above. overall I think they are great cars.

Wow, thanks for all the info everyone!

I can't afford a brand new one, so I'm probably gonna get a 99 or 2000 model.

I want to make one thing perfectly clear, I will not buy anyhting that is not a GM product, I know there's alot of Ford and foreign car fans here, but I'm not one of them

All in all, are they pretty reliable cars? Like I stated earlier, it must be a GT, no biggie that it's an auto only, I just wanted a stick because my Camaro is a stick, figured it would keep me in practice since the Camaro will hardly ever be driven again.

Time to get back to work

Hmmmm... I wouldn't buy a Grand Am.

Really, I don't like most of GM's current/recent lineup. It simply doesn't match up well when compared to the competition's products.

That's just my opinion though.

LMAO!!

It's very obvious how the car went from drawing board to production so quickly... they ignored the fact that it's uglier than sin!!

I work in a shop out here and my Ex g friend has a 01 SE Grand Am. They seem to eat up front brakes very quickly. We just had one in the shop today as a matter of fact.My Ex's car has had at least 3 or 4 sets of front brakes on her car.It only has @ 45k on it.She always takes it to the dealer so it's not like she is buying the 10 dollar brakes from pep boys or anything. She does'nt drive it hard either.?????

well the brakes typically last around 20-30K mi.s. thats pretty much all I work on Grand Ams for since the intake leaks go to the heavy tech.s. goin through 4 sets of brakes in 45K is ridiculous. never even heard of anyone wearing out that quickly. for todays cars/trucks, 20K is wearing out quick. only the sunfire uses brakes in the same amount of time. all our other car/truck lines are more like 40-60K for front brakes. but Id say they are a very reliable car. if you like the way the car looks and rides, then go for it. no need to worry.

I think GM's brake supplier sucks ***. My buddy has a 2002 Grand Prix with 7000 miles and the right front brake pads fell apart and stranded him. I guess what happened was the pad wore prematurely until the wear indicator broke off. Luckily it was warrantied but thats

I don't know why the brakes would wear that quick either.I just know what she has told me.The one that was in our shop today had 49 K on it and the owner told me that this was his 5th set that was going on his ride. We put on raybestos Quiet stop pads. They are good pads and not exactly cheap. The last ones he put on were ceramics that he said he paid like $50 - $60 for.Onece again not using a cheap product.I have no Idea.??
