im stumped

today i was driving to my cousins house and ont he way there. i hit a light, im at the light all of a sudden i go to accell and i got nothing it started to stall out on me. im like ok weird. so it catches around 2 grand and starts going im like ok. so i hit the next light go to accel i get hte same thing. well i decided to pull over and check the fuel pressure, its fine, i check the throttle not sticking at all, i check the throttle blades they are opening, i check the fuel bowls they are full. i check to see if fuel is coming out of hte carb it is. i hear the air whistling ont he way in. but yet its stuttering hardcore. what could it be.
i jsut replaced the ignition box due to a previous proble i had with my old one.

im thinking tune up cuz all of a sudden upon Downshifting im getting backfiring, its backfiring above 3 grand and i have no idea wtf is goign on.

If any one knows please tell me.
btw Chris u see this callm eplease.

Re: im stumped

yo, I forgot my phone at work today. you can call me tomorrow afternoon. pull a couple plugs, prolly carbon fouled. if there black get a new set and throw them in. we'll lean out the carb a little bit. have you checked the timing? if the plugs dont look really bad, you should check the timing. if the timings way retarded we'll have to pull the dist. to check the dist. gear. either of these could cause your problem, but Id say with the backfiring, its prolly the sec. scenario.

Re: im stumped

That distributor makes me cringe! he he he Goodluck guys. I can't give tuning advice yet, sorry.

So far all I know is... Don't run more than 7PSI or fuel goes everywhere. I ran 8-9PSI for months but 5-7 is friendlier.

Re: im stumped

Try and move your distributor, it may have just come loose, or your cam gear may have ate up your distributor gear.

Re: im stumped

cool, cause that was prolly the worst thing it could have been if you were chewing up dist. gears. so the plugs are more then likely fouled. or something happened with the carb. poss. has contaminants in it or something. but Im still goin with fouled plugs.

Re: im stumped

im thinking the plugs too. i went to the same gas station i usually go to i didnt put in 87 i put in 93 lol so its not the wrong octane for hte timing. i made sure i use premium evertime. so i gotta check the plugs today i went and threw for a bit and took some BP up at the hs so i didnt have time tomoro while im relaxing the arm for friday ill be checking a couple plugs. i konw they are firing. i can see a blue glow each time one fires at night, which im not sure its not jumping its just between the plug and the engine. its not a big jump like from wire to wire or nething like that. but yeah i doubt its the dist gears it woulda shown some kinda wear about 200 miles ago when i took the dist out. but the gears didnt even have ne wear on them at all.

the timing curve could be messed int he dist though. like one of the springs but i doubt it.

tomoro night afta work imma take a couple plugs out and check them. i got hte feeling thats what it is too. cuz i can hear the air getting in i watched the throttle blades open. so i konw they are working. i reset the fuel ratio on it. i leaned it out then made it richer same problem so im thinking its not that. i checked the bowls theya re both filled.

hows the other car running right now?

Re: im stumped

if you can see a spark/arc around the sp. plugs thats not good. shouldnt be able to see ANYTHING. that means its arcing from the spark plug to the head, and its not firing in the cyl..

I didnt know you played baseball. thats cool. I wish I was more into sports through high school. I didnt get into sports till around 23 or so. anyways, time for work. ttyl.

yeah i figured me seeing the blue glow from spark isnt good . whcih means i need to check all my plugs and figure out whey they are archin im thinking its cz they are corroded but ill find out tonight when i take one off to just get an idea of why itz running like it is.

yeah i played vars. baseball in 10th grade its been 3 yrs since ive played and im looking to go to a graduates school and play there. MTU has a nice club team, plus i can play hockey up there...... only thing its in the UP. then i become a YOOPER. lol and that means its also time to get a vehicle thats good on gas like a bike.

but ill call you after a pull a plug and look at it.

Re: im stumped

Usually when the spark arcs over the plug it means the plug is bad, check the plug for cracks in the ceramic insulation, its very common that they crack and then won't fire. If in doubt change the plugs, they are cheap and your taking them out anyway.

Woot for being right. What's the first thing I told you to do when you IM'd me, John? "Go outside and turn the lights off, pop the hood and look for sparks."
