If You Had To Pick One Symbol To Represent Detroit, What Would It Be?

I have this ideas spinning in my head. It will be mostly car related, but I am looking for input.

For me the big tire on I-94 sings Detroit to me. Yes I know it is in Romulus/Allen Park, but you get the idea.

Other responses I have gotten so far have been the Packard, The Welcome To Detroit express way sign, and Tiger Stadium.

Any and all input will be appreciated. Also too if you could post a link to a pic of your example that would be extra hot.

TIA

Wink

Burned down buildings, yellow police tape, tires pilled up on people's front lawns, orange construction signs, crumbling roads.

The Motor City has set quite a few "First's"

*The Manufacturing revolution / Mass Production of the Automobile.
* The first paved Road in the USA, Woodward...M1
* The Traffic Light was a first in detroit and created by a local african american.
* The milestone in Drag racing being first car's to run / brake into the 9's then 8's then 7's were from the motorcity.

* Stroh's beer, Vernors, Wonder bread...all born in Detroit

I work Downtown Detroit and I have a full list of stuff Detroit represents:

1. Expensive parking
2. That stench in the air that lets you know your in Detroit
3. The high amount of convicted felons roaming the streets, and the even higher amount of felons who were never caught from their crimes.
4. A lot of $500 cars with $1500 systems and $4000 rims.
5. The amount of vacant buildings
6. The rudest city in the world (excluding France)
7. The amount of cheap liquor in every store that gets more people hooked on alcohol
8. The casinos which take all the hard working peoples money yet claim they give jobs back to the city
9. Traffic jams and people who can't drive
10. Detroit City taxes which I don't see helping the city at all
11. The potholes on Woodward and other streets that have been there longer than any other pothole in a paved street in the country
and last but not least
12. The amount of people who stand around all day begging for money and asking for $.50 when they could make a lot more money if the City of Detroit would pay them to fix up the city, but wait if they had jobs instead of begging for change they wouldn't be able to collect food stamps, unemployment, and social security; come to think of it these "beggers" are smart, I bet they make more money than I do.

Now you don't notice any of this stuff on your local trips to watch a hockey game, Tiger game, car show or something like that but if you live or work in Detroit you know that the city really needs to be fixed up right.

The "Detroit Industry" Fresco on the north and south wall of the Detroit Institute of arts.

Edsel Ford commissioned it but some people at the time didn't care for the fact that a socialist artist from Mexico painted it.
Almost poetic justice huh.
Here are some other pictures of Famous Detroit Landmarks.

I also always liked the Albert Kahn Designed marble lighthouse on Belle Isle and the Belle Isle Fountain.

Sorry for all the negative input but I work for a lawfirm downtown and I walk to the Coleman Young building/Wayne County Circuit Court a lot and there are just too many criminals at the court. There are many good things about Detroit, but I see a lot of the bad parts and unfortunately I see the stuff that gives Detroit a bad name. A good symbol of Detroit would be all the old buildings, even the vacant ones, which show how Detroit was once a great city and they give hope of how Detroit could be if it were cleaned up. For example the old Wayne County building is a sight to see with all the old brass statues and stuff on top.

i'd second the old detroit tigers "D"

or the big tire, they both scream detroit.

yes, in reality the city sucks but it first has to start mentally. build and image an work with positive people to get things done. as long as there is a kiss a$$ running the city and everyone is afraid of jesse jackson and the rest of them nothing will get done.

explain to me why there are vacant buildings ect. if that were to exist in any other city the land would be taken away from the owner if things weren't kept up and put up for auction. the only reason the city is the way it is, is because the city officials allow it.

this thread wasn't made for compaints though, lets stay on the question a hand.
