IIRC, littering is an up to $500/90 day misdemeanor. If you go to the court date and they seem like they are wanting to make an example of you, plea not guilty and hire a lawyer

Most likely you will get a fine. POSSIBLY a non reporting probation. Depends on your record and how you react in court...

This is my first offense on anything. Never been in court except to fight a landlord on money. I am just gonna tell them it was my first time doing something dumb like that, I learned my lesson and already feel bad and will do community service if necessary or not to make up for my poor decision. But 500 bucks for a beer bottle? How the hell are they gonna do that to a college kid? They gotta know I don't have that kind of money, espically living on my own, paying for college and my apt..

Unfortunately they don't set the fines based on what you can afford to pay.

Sorry to hear man, but the point is to deter people from littering. Just think if we all threw bottles on the ground any time we feel like it... it would be a big mess. Kind of like the ghetto

Eric,
Them CMU cops are bastards ar'nt they I too got busted for some Illegal activities last time I was there.I got popped for being p!ss drunk and watering down they Wayside parking lot. Really dumb yes I know.I had to go up there for court and all that fun stuff.I have a clean record and they saw that I (and one of my friends) had just made a stupid drunken mistake.Mt Pleasant has what they call a diversion program. It is for people with clean records.I think I had to pay between $100 - $200 to get in through the citys attorneys office. They oversaw me and my friends case. We then had to complete 40 hours of community service in a certain ammount of time.We were then placed on probation for 6 months. If you don't get in any trouble in that time,it does'nt go on your record. If you get busted for something else dumb then you lose the money you spent to get in the program, and you have to go see the judge who will now at this point throw the book at you.You might want to look into this.At least ask them about it.Now that I think about it they sent me paperwork for it before my court date came up.Any way hope that helps ya.I learned that it does not pay to p!ss in public. Will I do it again?? Hell Yeah just not in front of a cop next time At least the piggy did'nt take me to jail.Went back in the way and had some more Tequilla

Well i dont think it would be as bad if it were a pop bottle.I hope your 21 they could turn it into a minor in possession and more BS. Your a college kid and the athorities dont want kids messing up their town.......the police and town folk still have to live there after you leave with your degree. They may also want to scare the crap out of you or make an example out of you.But i dont think you wil do any time over it so relax. You will be looking at some fines/court costs though.Oh and they may make you jump thru some hoops. Keep us posted. Good luck! Steven

I mean they dont pay people 30 dollars an hour to pick up garbage. Ill smash some bottles on the street to so people get flats on there way to work. Dont worrie will beat the system

Eric go to court and dress nice and be respectfull. Explain to the judge that you are going to school and trying to become a good productive person. Tell him you made a mistake and will never do it again. Let him know you made a mistake and how sorry you are. I got in some trouble many years ago when I lived in California. It was over a girl and her ex pulled a gun on me. He broke in my house and laid a picture of her and I on my water bed and stabbed it with a knife about 10 times. A few days later I ran into him and I allmost killed the guy. They were going to give me 6 years. I talked to the judge and explained everything. I had made a police report about three different times. Even tho the law in Cal was a automatic 6 years they gave me probation and cleared my record after 2 years probation. The reason I am telling you all this is to say the court took into consideration that I worked every day and was going to school nights and had no record. Be respectfull and show how sorry you are and I think you will be ok.
