Arrow HInk's tip of the month!

Lets face it... we all like to save money, if and when possible. Where can we save a few bucks when we are re-gearing our rear ends? I use Royal Purple in my rear housing. With a T/A cover it now holds about 3.5 quarts. At $9.99 a quart or so, it's a darn shame to just dump it, especially if it is under a couple of years old (drag strip years are even less).

Simple solution and you can save the cost of new fluid. As you drain the fluid, drain it through a couple of coffee filters. This leaves me with a very nice and clean fluid to reintroduce into the housing when finished and saves me over $35.00.

Watch for "HInk's tip of the Month" next month!

The oil doesn't only get dirty. It also becomes degraded from the many heat cycles it's put through. That's why you should use new fluid.

DON'T EVEN TRY THAT EXCUSE TOMMY!!! What is the differenc if I change gears once every two years and recycle the fluid a couple of times and you leaving your fluid in for 70,000 + miles?? Guess it doesn't break down until it hits the outside air, huh?

At least I've filtered out some of my contaminents! If I was using the normal cheap dino stuff, I would'n sweat the $2.99 for a quart! BESIDES! Synthetics don't lose their lubricating values like other, CHEAPER fluids.

Greg... I don't drink fresh beer let alone the Pabst beer you've filtered with your kidneys and liver, which I might add are wearing out quicker than mine!!

Who said anything about leaving it in for 70,000 miles???

You're just trying to save money so you can afford the attourney for that little "rest area" arrest you had a while back, aren't you?

Not that I condone the reuse of gear oil, but let's think about it hypothetically. I have 85W140 in my 12-bolt right now, and that stuff was like molasses when I poured it in. It'd probably take a year for just one quart to pass through the filer, so what do you do during the 3.5 years it takes to filter it?
Just buy some new oil, HInk.

Hint 2: Don't fix that front seal and intake oil leak Just add a quart of oil every month and change the filter every 6 months. No more oil changes

P.S. I like Pabst beer

Hey, That's my tip of the week! Plus if your leak is big enough, you don't even have to change filter! My beater runs 3 quarts through every 1000 miles. Buy cheap Wal-Mart oil at less than a buck a qt. No muss, no fuss, no having to get rid of the used oil!

The reuse of rear fluid after a year of drag racing is quite different than the reuse of fluid after 50,000 miles. Plus... I don't use the cheap stuff, I use Royal Purple.

As far as that intake leak, I pulled my intake last year and have NO leak! Guess it's just a matter of knowing what you are doing when reassembling.

The Royal Purple I use is 85-140 and isn't like molasses, you must use the CHEAP stuff.

I would never put anything cheap in my car. As a matter of fact, I have Royal Purple 85W140 in my 12 bolt. I should point out that it was probably about 50ºF when I put it in, and man was that stuff thick!
