Help on registering a car with no title.

Got a quick question for all you restoration guys. I'm looking at buying 1 1991 camaro, but the catch is, that the car is in NY, and technically registered in NC, but they do not have the title. How can i legally buy this car, and can i get it registered? I heard that if i contact the NC secretary of state, and have them check to make sure the VIN is clean, then i should be OK, but how do i go about doing this? Has anyone here had experience?

Thanks ahead of time!

Jason

Not sure about newer cars but with old cars other states didnt' have titles and you just got a bill of sale. My dad had a 39 Chevy we picked up for Missouri and just got a bill of sale and was able to get a title from that. No idea about newer cars from out of state. You would for sure need a bill of sale and then apply for a lost title and then get that transferred to MI.

Re: Help on registeringing a car with no title.

im not sure if this works with out of state vehicles but im pretty sure it will..

what you do is use this form http://www.michigan.gov/documents/TR-54_38480_7.pdf

and fill it out, and then call your local police department and have them send an offficer out to run the vin to verify its not stolen, once thats done take the form back to the seceretary of state and they will issue a title, the only hang up is when filling out the form stating how you aquired the vehicle just tell you bought it from a guy off the side of the road and never transfered the title, then lost it, and you cant get ahold of the previous owner due to the fact he moved... otherwise they will tell you to bring in the previous owner to sign off..

ive done this with a few cars with out titles, the key is making sure its not stolen or itll come back on you...

Later,
Greg

Would a carfax show if the car was stolen?

I got the VIN from the guy to be able to check it out. Or does anyone know a police officer that could run the vin before i buy this thing?

The VIN is

1G1FP23T8ML214915

Thanks ahead of time
The guy said that the VIN is clear, but you never know, he has a registration for the car, as well as he said he will give me a bill of sale.

You dont need a title to register a car if it is already registered in your name. And if it is in your name, all you need to do to get a new title is go to the SOS with id and the plate number to get a new title.

Re: Help on registeringing a car with no title.

Inquiring minds want to know: Is it a stolen hack or not? Is it owned by anyone famous or infamous?

Re: Help on registeringing a car with no title.

It isn't owned by anyone famous, and i don't believbe that it is stolen, or Mike would have told me, am i to believe this correct mike? Should i be safe in buying this one, and applying for a lost title when i get her home?

Thanks for the help.

Re: Help on registeringing a car with no title.

I wouldn't touch it without a title myself - this is a 6 cylinder RS model with a previously branded title, and it shows a reported mileage of over 120k, even with the broken odometer. You'll be spending more than the car is worth for gas money, and have a headache waiting for you trying to get a title when you get home. If they want to GIVE the car to you fine, but if they want you to PAY for the car, then the least they can do is jump through the hoops at the DMV and get you a good title.

This is based on a previous experience of mine - I bought a parts car from a local seller, who "couldn't find" the title, but promised to get me one "in a couple of days" - long story short, 2 months went by and no title, so I returned the car to the knucklehead I got it from. (No junkyard would take the car without a title.) He evidently dumped it into a gravel pit, and a few days later I had a State Trooper come to my house and advise me I was on the hook for off-road recovery of the vehicle, along with environmental damage fines from the DNR. Luckily, I had a witness that the car was returned to the knucklehead, but whatever, who needs that kind of grief???

$.02
