Help Me Choose My Performance Package
Help Me Choose My Performance Package
Okay, here is what I am up against. I have my car now down around 12.0 (At Milan No Less, See Mods In Signature). I am going to do one last peformance blitz on my car but can't choose what way to go. I have it narrowed down to two packages and need peoples input. Both have there advantages and will bring lots of fun.
1. ATI, #8 Procharger..... with new injectors & fuel pump (I think that says enough).
2. 12 bolt rear with 3:73's, 125 Wet Nitrous kit, New 16" rims with ET Streets (to take advantage of the 3:73's).
It is a toss up in my mind. My car runs around 12.0 right now so what do you think? Package 1 gets me power all the time and should put me near 10.99's. Package 2 would give me good power on the street with the gear and GOOOOBS of TQ. I would hope that I could see a 11.7 out of the car with the new rear end and gear (Possible)? With the Nitrous I should be in the 10's and package 2 would be about $2000 (not adding in the $80 a bottle to fill the bottle) cheaper then package 1.
Please HELP me I am having a hard time on this one.
Thanks,
Bill

I would go with # 2. The main reason being that there will be added expenses to #1, the first being a 12 bolt that you will end up buying anyway, when your 10 bolt takes a crap.
The blower would be nice, having max power all the time. But I question the durability of the motor when blown, especially a stock block. If you were going to rebuild the motor with forged internals, after 1 or 2 years, then I say go for it.
But for streetability, and 10 sec time slips, I say get the head & cam, w/nitrous. Skip the 16's, get some 15" rims (Convo's fit with absolutely no grinding.) with ET Streets or better, Et Drags. I managed a 10.68@125 with that setup last year. I thought it should have done better, and may have with a 28" tire, among other things.
My advice is to not waste your time & money going with a no name head & cam package. Stick with MTI, ARE, TEA, GTP, or LPE. Get head studs while you are in there, you'll save $$ there if you ever end up taking the heads off for anything, plus you will lower your chances of lifting a head (which I did by trying to save a few $$ by not going with the studs.)
Head
Cam
high volume oil pump
head studs
hardened pushrods
custom tuning
Get the car tuned for the nitrous!! The 100 shot on my car may have been optimal for a stock car, but in was severly lean on the dyno. The 150 fuel jet with the 100 nitrous jet ended up being perfect. Speedworks or APE will both do a great job of tuning.
I'm sure I missed a few things, but that's a start. Good luck.

2. 12 bolt rear with 3:73's, 125 Wet Nitrous kit, New 16" rims with ET Streets (to take advantage of the 3:73's).
I second that.
you WILL need a rear end w/the supercharger. plus wthe 12 bolt you could launch the car as hard as you wanted to w/o worry of breaking it. w/equals more fun
plus the installs really simple for that stuff. not that the ati was hard to install, just more time consuming.
I also agree about the 15" rims. why compromise? isnt this about being as fast as you can be? you would be giving up some grip w/the 16" rims. plus there isnt as much of a tire selection for the 16" rims I dont think. you might also want to think about 28" tires w/4:10 gears. it works out to the same gearing overall as 26" tires and 3:73 gears, but w/better bite off the line cause of the bigger contact patch of the bigger tire.
good luck bill. sounds like fun.
black sunshine,
the convo pros will fit LS1 cars w/no grinding? I dint know that. same offset as other rims? 15x10 w/7.5 backspacing? do the fronts still need the spacers? if so, what size do the spacers need to be? I have a buddy that wants to get 15's but didnt realy want to grind the calipers since they would show through the drag stars. thanks

Yes, the Convo Pro's fit without grinding, fronts, and the backs. I have the 15x7.5 with 5" BS, because with the 15X10, they stick out past the fenders. The reason for this in because Centerline wont make one with the right BS for our cars. Maybe someday.
The Convo Pro is the only rim that I know of, that is mass produced, that doesn't require grinding. Bogarts are a custom rim that is also an option. Those are on my list of to get items. Haven't priced them, but I hear they are quite expensive. I think I can make it one more year with the convo's.
Stick with the 3:73's and the 28" tire. I ran out of RPM in 3rd gear with the 3:73 and a 26" tire, w/ H-C-N. Going to a new tire this year.

Ive heard that the nitrous needs more tire height. why is that? I currently have 3:73 gears and 26" tires but I think I cross the line at 5500 w/o nitrous. w/nitrous what would I cross the finish line at comparitivly? my eng. will rev. to 7000 if need be, but I think it falls off after 6500 (thats where Ive been shifting at). I plan on getting it on a dyno so I will know for sure where it falls off at (and what the power is
). I have nitto dr's now and want to get et streets but was goin to wait till I get to the track w/the nitrous this year to see where my finish line rpm was at.

option #2 Please. I am a fan of N2O.I have used it on my car but I am still learning about it . I believe it is the best bang for your buck. You will eventually need the 12 bolt also. I have one question for you.$80 for a fill on a bottle???
I would start looking for a new place.for $80 that **** better be from the moon or something for that price.Last time I filled my 10lb bottle I think I paid @ 4.00 lb. It was about $42 or $43 for 11 Lbs. I have since found a place out here that will fill it for @ $32.So next time I get it filled I will let ya know.I am hoping to get her on the dyno at school in the next couple of weeks with a 150 shot

Andy,
No I don't want my car to look like yours. Not that yours look bad or anything.I just want them for the track.I feel I could free up a tenth or two with some lighter wheels and some skinnys up front.I would only be using them for the track.I love the way my wheels look on my car and don't really want to change that.Unless som Torq Thurst II's came along at a good price.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm
Okay, all you experts have spoken and I have decided.
OPTION #2 It Is....................
Okay sine you have made up my mind for me. Lets take the next steps.
1.) What Nitrous Kit To Get?
2.) What 12Bolt Should I get (and from where?) Remember I Have An A4 With A 3200 Stall. The Car Made 410 Ft Lbs Tq On The Dyno Last Fall. How Will The 3:73's Effect This Number? How Much Time Should I Pick-Up Going From 3:23 Gears To 3:73's? Is this mod good for .3?
3.) Rim & Tire ? Can I keep my 17 Konigs up front and buy a pair of 15's to stick Convo's on out back? If So, will it have a funky stance. Or, does it stay the same because of taller side walls on the back tires? Where should I get my tires for the rear?
Thanks, I can't wait to get this thing going. Hey Chris, want to do some work here soon?
Thanks,
Bill

bill, I have a buddy that sells NX stuff. I'll email him and see what he can offer. (he's a dealer for them)
dont know on the 12 bolt. my friend ryan just got one for around $1800 on a group purchase, but I think thats over with. I'll email him to find out where he got it from.
you would be fine w/the front rims you have. you plannin on just putting the 15s on at the track then right? if so why not go for the et drags (slicks)? the overall tire diameter is what matters. your front tires are prolly only 25" tall so they would still give you the right rake.
as for the work, when ever your ready.

Can you find out from your buddy what the part number and price is for the MAF plates that NX just came out with? With my car being a WS6 I don't have a real good place for the nozzle and was thinking about getting the MAF plates instead.
Thanks.
Chris, Let me know
Let me know what you find out about the nitrous system.
I'll be pulling my car out of storage in about 3-4 weeks. Email me and let me know what you want to do the install on this? It will have all the options.
Thanks,
Bill
