Headers make car run slower???

my previous best was a 12.87 @ 110 I picked my self up a set of FLP LTs bring the car to the track and i run a 12.9 and i couldent get my trap higher that 109. Could this be because of the conditions out side? I dident get the car tuned to get rid of the SES light for the EGR could that have anything to do with it?
thanks, Dane

You probably did lose power without tuning. It usually goes like this: Your car now needs more fuel for part throttle driving, so your ECM is adding most of the time from it's base settings. The problem is that when you go to ful throttle, it adds the same amount of fuel. If you scan it, it will tell you for sure, but that is pretty common with a header install.

If you don't want to spring for tuning, you can probably straighten it out with a MAF translator, but you still need a scan tool. Just keep leaning it out at part throttle until the Long Term Fuel Trims (LTFT's) go negative.

It's possible that tuning is an issue. But the track conditions/weather could play a part as well.

Track conditions can play a big part... What were your 60's like on the before and after passes? Its possible your just losing traction now that you're (hopefully) making more power.

Best thing to do is get it on a wideband O2 and see whats up.

Your SES light is on which means you are running in open loop. I don't know about your car but in 3rd gens, we go open loop at WOT so we have to change our PE vs. RPM, PE vs. Coolant temp, PE vs. LV8 (load) etc etc etc. Your headers are pulling your exhaust gasses out better and actually may be messing with your O2 readings (falsifying them). So.... your car is trying to compensate for a phantom problem (thinks its running lean) that does not exist. So in this case, its dumping more fuel in, and running up your effective Air Fuel Ratio to probably somewhere in the 12.0 range. Most motors like it in the 12.7 range. I can tell you that even on a fucxked up motor I was able to pull 20 RWTQ and 10rwhp by tuning the fuel and spark curve at WOT.

You need a tune to get rid of the codes. It goes into failsoft mode with an SES light on and you're running at less than optimum.

I have read some cars are more secitive to LT than others. Did you put sims on the rear O2 sensors. That also trips the SES light.

Call up Joe at Livernois. He'll probably be able to hook you up with a nice dyno tune.

Rob, did they make 30 more peak torque at a sacrifice of area under the curve style torque just to get some quick "look we got you more power" numbers? If so, your buddy needs to throw a big fat cam in there and really start breaking the sound barrier.
