Going to run 1st 1/4 mile next week at Stanton, what do I need?

Going to run 1st 1/4 mile next week at Stanton, what do I need?

I'm going to Stanton on Wednesday(20th) for test&tune. I've never run a 1/4 mile before. What do I need. A helmet? Do they make you wear pants?

Please fill me in guys.

Thanks in advance, and hope I see some of you there. I'll be driving the car in my sig, pics included.

You need a helmet for faster then 13.99. You should wear long pants and a t-shirt.

Well, I'll get the helmet so that my car will go faster than 13.99 just kidding.


I'll eventually be reaching those times, hopefully sooner than later, so I guess I better pic one up. Any good places to buy cheap ones?

I really don't. Just make sure it is Snell 2000 certified. I think the full-face is a little hot but that is what I use. The first time I went I brought a helmet and did not wear it first run. Ran 13.69 and wore it the next two runs. They were 14.29 and 14.58 with lots of tire spin. Then I took it off and ran a 13.73. Since then I have not run slower then 13.63 and always wear it. Just watch for about a half hour and see how the guys burnout and stage. It is a little easier to stage in the right hand lane because you can see the staging box better.

If your car is basically stock and you don't forsee yourself running faster than 13.99, you don't need a helmet. Sounds like you have some time to look around for a reasonable price on a good one.

At Martin, there is no way to steer around the waterbox, so your front tires will get wet as well as your rears. Not really too much to be done about it. *shrug*

Most racers follow a staging ettiquette (sp?). Prestage, then wait for the other person to prestage before staging. And I hope I don't even have to say this, but stage with your front tires!

Plenty of people will probably jump in here to tell you about how to launch, so I won't take up time and space doing that. But I'm here to tell you from personal experience... don't forget to stop! There's not enough room down there at the end to coast to a slow enough speed to make that turn, you have to use the brakes. Although there is nice sand at the end if you screw up. Not like at Stanton where there's some bales of hay and then a guardrail. (Ouch if you hit that.)

You do reailize tomorrow is going to be one of the hottest days of the year? If you wait a few weeks the evenings will get alot cooler resulting in better performance. But, your are probaboly stoked about going to the track. I don't blame you; it's a blast!

Yeah, I know. It's the only Wednesday night I'll have free for the rest of the summer. I'll just have to make the best of it.

Maybe it will mean more track time for me because it won't be as busy.

you know what else that means a Sticky hot track for better 60' times I say go give it hell.. Maybe ill ever swing out and watch posibley give you a pointer

Sounds good. Maybe I'll see you there. My car seems to be running great, but there's only one way to find out. My biggest interest is to see my times vs. other stock LT1's(with CAI). Too bad it isn't a little cooler.

Stanton has open test & tune during weekends in late September and October. Mostly Sundays though.

They also have mid night madness on fridays from 7-12pm. Ill be there this friday.

I posted this in the Drag Strip section, but will repost it here. It was a good experience, and I have a lot to learn. I think I'm going to go again in the fall when it's cooler. I know now that I was too concerened with a good R/T(My worst was a .8, but most were .6). I should have concentrated more on a smooth launch. I kept ramping up my RPM's, and giving it too much clutch, bogging the engine(almost to a stop many times).

Well, here is my best time.

Do you see where I could improve the most?

Are these times way slow, or about right. It was hot and humid, as you can see, but I don’t know how much that affects our LT1’s My car is bone stock except for a K&N FIPK. I ran 10 times, and my launches SUCKED 7 out of the 10. The track surface was so much stickier than the street. I kept bogging my engine. I have a M6, so the amount of clutch I’m use to letting out was way too much. I had no tire spin, which led to a bog. I've been driving the car for 6 years, and I think I'm too used to driving it on the street. I wasn't prepared for the track surface to be so much different. I'm running street tires(Potenza RE730's, on stock 16" rims)

One time I lined up against a dragster that ran 130 MPH at the 1/8 mile mark. He left me like I was standing still. It was cool though. I have it one video. It's not often that you get to see your car get smoked by a dragster.

How hard is it to get to a 2.0 60 ft time with street tires and a M6? Think I can do it? The tires are 245/50R16 Potenza RE730's.
