Garage floor coatings

Does anyone have experience with garage floor coatings? I'd like to put something on my garage floor that would make it easier to clean up automotive fluid spills, but I'm concerned that most coatings would make for an extremely slippery floor in the case of a fluid spill. Anybody have any comments?

Re: Garage floor coatings

I just used this stuff on our table tops for Ramchargers show display booth.
It turned out pretty cool looking with the fleck chips in it. I used the rustolum brand and got it home depot. http://www.rustoleum.com/Product.asp...56&SBL=1&dds=5

You can also go to http://www.ucoatit.com/ for the product.
U-coatit is $$$ but I have a buddy with it on his floor and its sweet.
Good luck

Floor coatings are nice. You need to add some kind of agrigate to keep it from being slippery. Such as aluminum oxide. My neighbor is a Sherwin Williams paint rep and he is getting me their best stuff for my floor. U-Coat-It is nice too. I tried the home depot Epoxy-Shield at my old garage and it was okay for spills but was a thin layer and wore away.
Good luck!

What ever you do, don't use the stuff from Home Depot. It wil look nice at first then will come up anytime you pull something across it.

You need a professional kit to make it work well. You will need to make sure the cement is cleaned before you apply the coating. The U-Coat stuff sounds nice. I guees you get what you pay for. If you are looking for a company to do it I have someone that does our eval building floors here at work. They are awesome, durable as hell. I'll dig there contact info out.

I looked into doing my shop floor with this stuff, but I have a couple pretty big cracks in it so it probably would never look quite right.

Fine silica sand works great in those floor coatings. In college I had a side job putting ashphalt coating on driveways and parking lots and we always mixed a ton of silica sand in with it.

Re: Garage floor coatings

Thanks guys, sounds like my best bet is U-Coat-It with fine silica sand. Where would I get the sand?

Actually, you can find the real fine stuff at pet stores. Maybe try Pet Supplies Plus or PetSmart. If you don't mind a little rougher texture you can use the stuff they sell at Home Depot or Lowes as play sand. It will actually work much better for traction than the fine stuff and is cheaper but is a little tougher to slide around on your back on if you are working under the car. If the coating you buy is pretty thick, I'd say definitely use the regular sand and not the fine stuff. Then you just mix it in with the paint before you put it down. Otherwise you can paint first and sprinkle the fine sand on top before it dries. You may want to try a little spot each way and see which you like better.

Another tip for you. If you have any oil spots, burn them off with a propane torch first then follow up with some concrete cleaner.

Yeah, I'll do a sample spot each way and see which I like better. Thanks again.

The paint with the sand also works great for the tops of your trailer, where you might be stepping. We use it on our semi's, and it has saved me from falling many times. Let us know how it works out. I'm sure I'll be coating my own garage someday.
