Friday at US131 Dragway

Several of us are going to the US 131 "Motorsports Park" on Friday (May 2--opening day) for test n' tune, so I thought I'd make it an unofficial get-together. Gates open at 6:00 PM. I'll probably bring the video camera, so let me know if you want to be taped.

I just got a flyer in the mail from the track today and it says gates open at 6, TNT starts at 6:30 and testing ends at 10:00 So since it is the first night it should be packed and we might get 2 runs in if were lucky.

I would be interested in going. Never been to one before though. What all do I need to bring? How much does it cost? If I come straight from work I might make it by 6. Nothin special, just a mostly stock '99 Z28 w/stock tires(heard bad stuff can happen w'drag radials and 4.10's). I need some times for my sig .

Is this a bad day to go for the first time?

If I read the flyer correctly it is going to be $25 to get in, but then that might be the price for Saturday's points racing.

Another way to go would be Stanton's MidMichiganMotorplex. They now have a Friday night program starting at 7:00pm and racing 'till midnight every week. $15 to run and $8 to watch. And they give out trophys to the fastest cars in several categories. And you'll get in more than 2 runs. If tomorrow gets r___ed out then I might give Friday a try.

Yes, that's how it works every Friday night, and yes, there will probably be alot of people there. I'm just going to spectate, which costs $8. TNT is $15, points racing is $25 (no points racing on Fridays).

No, if your car is mostly stock you'll be fine. Once you start changing tires, tuning between runs, loading/unloading a trailer, etc., then you start getting fewer runs in. If you hot lap it, you should be able to get at least 4 runs in even this Friday. Just bring some cash and a tank of good gas.

It's ready to roll. I haven't put those heads on yet though--WAY too busy with school. I'll probably wait until this fall cuz I wanna drive it this summer! I didn't drive it at all last summer.

All this is good to hear. I was thinking about going, but didn't want to be out there by myself. I'll check with a couple guys I know to see if they'll bring out their 2001 WS6's too.

131 is only 1o miles from my house. I think I will come and watch the action since I have nothing worth running right now. Hopefully the stang will be back up soon. I hope to have the engine finished in a week or two.

So... who all should I be on the lookout for tonight and what time would be the best to get there?

I'm pretty sure I have the WS6 guys psyched about going. I've only been once myself and that was three years ago with my 98 Z28.

Couple of other questions:

Anyone know the proper launching RPMs for an M6? Two of us have A4s and if I remember right you just rev it up a bit while holding the brake and let loose when the light falls. I was guessing the guy with the M6 should 2000-2500 RPM then let the clutch out for launch... I'm totally clueless as to how the launches should actually work though, so PLEASE tell me if these are good tactics or not.

Do we need long pants (not shorts) to run?

Do we need helmets? If so, doea the rack have any helmets they rent/loan out?

Since none of us will be tuning (only testing) how many runs do you think we'll get in?

How late does the track stay open?

Becca,

You need pants.

And you will prolly need a helmet. Most tracks dont have them to rent.

Pull the car around the water box and them spin the tires just enough to clean them off.

Pull up and light the first yellow light and stop

Pull up to the 2nd yellow light and stop

Pull your parking break and let the clutch just slightly out to take up any slack in the drivetrain (reduces the initial shock to the rear tires on the launch)

push in clutch and Release parking break

Rev the car to about 1800-2200 rpm.

When the lights start going, realease the clutch all the way on the last yellow light.

DO NOT GIVE ANY EXTRA THROTTLE.

The car will launch forward and the front end will come up slightly. When the car's momentom(sp) is all but gone and the front end starts to come down.. Nail the throttle all the way...

This can be very hard to do, and most people panic and just go because the start the light too early.. Just remember your time doesnt start till you move so if you cant do all of that in time.. dont worry about it.. just go when your ready.

You may wanna practice a few times on the street to the get the launch down.. its very hard to NOT nail the throttle right away insted of waiting...

You need to be shifting at 6000 rpm. some of the 01'and 02's tachs are off, so it may be something like 5700 in 1st and then the rest of the gears will be okay.. (the tach may be slow

good luck

Sweet... thanks Phantom... I created a new thread for all my questions, as it's more track related in general than just 131.
