I'm looking at a Sony 2 or 3 mg. What else should I consider? Dont want to spend a fortune, just want something that will take good pics, and something that I wont regret buying in a year. Thanks.

 

on digital cameras. I did quite a bit of looking around before I got mine. I went with the Kodak DX3900. I absolutly love this camera. I don't believe I could have gotten a 3.1 Megapixel camera for this price that would be close. It takes great pictures and is so easy to use a 4 year old can operate it.

C-net gave it a 6 of ten, but look at the user comments. 91% is the best rating on any item I have ever reviewed on C-net.

The only bad thing about it is the 8M memory card. Other than that I have nothing but good things to say about mine.

 

The only problem is, that with the millions of people in this country, how do you suppose I'll ever find the one person that found that camera that "fell off the truck"? Help me figure that out.

 

I'm glad you asked this question because I'm also looking at digital cameras. It's one of the items on my Christmas/graduation want list. (Hint Hint! jk)

I like Derty's cute little beensy one, but I think it cost like $500. Then plus the memory card... $$$

My friend suggested to check out ubid.com. Said her dad bought some cool stuff on there for not a lot of money.

 

I have a dx3900 Kodak too.
For $250 bucks I have no complaints. It has served me well.

 

if you are only going to use them for digi pics, a 2.0 should be fine, and if your going for prints, go with a 3.0 or higher. Kodak's line is pretty nice, it's really easy to use, but their quality isnt the best. For the same price of the Kodak you could get a Cannon that blows it out of the water. If you are a newbie with pc's and want it as easy as possible, get the kodak with the eazy share doc.

I’m a Professional Photographer, and use my Digital Camera quite a bit. I’ve used the Kodak, Sony, Fuji and none compared to Olympus. I had the Olympus 490-D ($400) but recently upgraded to the C-720 Ultra Zoom ($600) now the 490 had fair resolutions and only a 3X zoom. However my new C-720 has 3.1 mega pixels which is 1984X1488 res. And an amazing 8X zoom. This Camera was a great deal for the features. I would highly recommend this one, but any Olympus would be IMO the best bang for your buck. No others compare. Hope this helps.

I have the Sony MVC CD200 which is 2.1 mega pixels, 6x zoom, Mpeg up to 3 min long and a bunch of other options i dont know how to use. It takes the 3" CD-r and CD-rw's which are 5 bucks a piece and holds over 500 pics on a disc in 640x480 and about 130 in 1600x1200 or 1600(3:2). I think you can buy this camera for around 500 brand new, and its well worth the money in my opinion. No memory sticks to deal with and the cds pop right in to your computer so you dont have to hook up any cords.

 

Mine is a Sony DSC-P7. It was about $500 plus the memory stick. It takes as much video as the stick can hold. Pictures are 3.2 MP and something like a 2400xsomething resolution. Which is large enough to get a high quality 30" poster made for your wheels up collection.

Yes it is tiny. You just plug a cable into the camera to download to the PC. The digital mini DV camera that I want to get also takes great photos, but it's over $2k .

Well...what camera you get depends on two things...how much do you wanna spend, and what exactly do you want to do?

Kodak's in genearl take fairly good pictures. However they lack many of the features that Sony's and Olymp's(sp?) have. Although Kodak's are cheaper in general also.
My real complaint about Kodaks is the video! Ick...MOV format...horrible compression...NO sound quality.
The other complaint is battery life...talk about 30 minute battery life using rechargable's

I recently got a Sony DSC-S75 for $475. I really like the camera. 3.2mp, 3x optical Zoom, 6x digital Zoom.
Takes very clear pictures, with no glare.
Has a bus load of automatic options. I am still learning/experimenting with them.
Things like slower shudder speed, auto backlight controll...you can even adjust the flash level.
And it takes fairly nice video. In 320*240, which is nice quality, and has very good audio reception, and quality (no distortion as of yet).
Claims 3 hour battery life. I have gotten it to about 2 hours and 45 min so far using it the whole time.
Once I let it just sit there on, and it stayed on for over 4 hours (with the screen on...connected to the computer).
Great camera...and IMO probably the best in its price range...


BTW: what does programming have to do with taking digital pics? I mean, I am taking C++ classes...and although digital cams are computer related...a programmer doesn't necessarily know a lot about them.
IE: my gf's father is a programmer for the air force (currently), and he is not all that technically savy. I mean he likes intel for crying out loud
Seriously...he knows how to build computers...but I look at his, and he wont buy a dvd player because he can't understand watching a DVD on computer (talk about difference in clarity vs TV....dot pitch anyone?). He has like a bazillion system tray icons, which makes his PIII 800 run slower than my old K6-2 450 system.
Just my rant for today...

 

My Dad made a fabulous suggestion this morning. SONY makes a digital camera that stores its pics (and videos?) on a rewriteable mini CD. So then when you want to get your pics onto your computer you just take the CD out and pop it in your computer. And rewriteable CDs, even small ones, are like $25-30 for a box, compare that to $75+ for a memory stick.

I think that's what I'm going to get. I told my parents that they can decide what they'd like to spend on a graduation gift for me, and then I'll make up the difference to get it.

I have an Olympus 130-d right now, but next week I'm getting and Olympus 500-d. The thing that I love best about the Olympus is the program that you use to download all your pictures is easy to use and there are not all kinds of annoying steps you have to take.
