Bye Bye Trans

Yesterday my transmission went out on me. Went to go put it in drive and it clunked real hard, I go to take it for a spin and it won't leave first. ARG! So I am keeping the shift kit, cooler (obviously) and the trans mount but I am gonna see if I can afford to have him put in heavy duty clutches, "The Beast" and a 5,000 rpm governer instead of the 4500rpm one. We will see around 1:00 what it will cost. A regular 700r4 rebuild costs 800 he said. So I am not sure how much the clutches and the beast will set me at.

Yep, I hear that's what happens when you start modifying your car... other stuff breaks. :blah: But then you rebuild it stronger.

BTW, what springs did you get (part number please)?

Grab an oar Eric, we're in the same boat!

Mine won't downshift when I manually put it down a gear and I can't get it to go into first no matter how slow I am going.

I don't know much about autos, but I'm curoius if just a flush and fill might help. Anyone want to comment on that?

I took it out to these guys in Lapeer called Pioneer Transmissions. There suppose to be good. They had a nice 55 chevy up in the air and a new mustang GT that looked modified. I normally go to Phil's transmission in front of Autocity Speedway. They did my shift kit and cooler and were real cool guys. Pioneer seems good too, my family goes thru them and were highly recommended. For a regular rebuild at pioneer they are asking 800.00. So I figure with some heavy duty clutches and some other stuff it shouldn't be to much higher. 1,000 bucks for a strong 700r4 with a big *** cooler. Kinda sucks it went out, I really didn't want to be 1,000 in the hole but I guess it had to be done sometime.

if I honestly had the time (I have to get to work up at mount p.) and the money (I am bumming this money off my parents who think its perfomance parts that ruined my car) so I have to kinda deal with what i got and try to sneak by with those heavy duty parts on my 700r4 for now.

Mine just did the same thing. I was getting on the freeway and heard a loud thump. Then I stopped at a light. When I took off it would barely come out of first. It will just rev out and then eventually go into second. So does this sound like trans just went? If so anyone know a good shop around detroit?

Thanks Andy

Bummer

Well Eric I was there right after I bought my GTA, I was driving home on the hyway and then, nuthin, just coasted to an exit and had it towed. Fenton Holly trans built one up for me from scratch (old one was real busted up and they say it was out of a caprice!!!) for 1200.00 it shifts real hard into second and I generally like it. Still I should have done the five speed thing looking back.............

Dan

89 GTA maroon , looks stock but has a built 86 vette built up with a comp cam ect ect. comp engineering suspension, lots of other hidden goodies, no I dont do NAWS.

Not yet. No one up here in Mount P will do them because there "aftermarket" and I have "aftermarket" parts on my car. How f-cking gay is that? In the end I will probably have to have APE do them. I have a buddy up here with a lowered vehicle and no one up here will do an alighnment for him because its been "modified" Every freaking shop, even the dealerships.

So does this sound like trans just went?
Yup, that sounds like mine. Now that also sounds like a bad governer, so have them look at that first before they do a full rebuild. I was told there was a good chance it was my govener because thats what the trans will do when the governer is sticking but of course, i am not that lucky.

Well, i just got the call from the shop. THere gonna install all heavy duty parts, a higher stall converter (2000-2200) then my 1600-1700 one, "The Beast", my car already has a vette servo which I thought was pretty cool, my boys at Phil's transmission must have put that in for me when they did my transgo shift kit, and its gonna run me a total of 1,100.00 which is pretty good for those parts. They said that trouble seemed to have came from the torque converter. Well I guess I will have a pretty decent setup at the end of the day for a decent price.
