Question Anyone from GR/Lan./Flint/Metro Det. have a remote starter installed?

With winter coming on, I'm looking for a good deal on a remote starter for my '01 GMC Sierra C3. I'm looking for one that will work with the Passkey system & factory alarm, is installed by someone higher on the ladder than a monkey, and has a good guarantee. I won't pay an arm and a leg either.

I'd drive to Grand Rapids, Flint, or metro Detroit for a good deal.

What do you suggest?

Models, prices and seller's details appreciated.

I've had Best Buy install the one I had on my '99 S-10 and the one on our '02 GTP. The model is the Valet by DEI they both work great. It is fairly cheap if you don't mind having two key fobs as the one will start the truck and the factory one opens the doors (My S-10 was this way), but it gets more expensive to replace the factory fob with the aftermarket ones (GTP). Also the GTP has the PASS-KEY III system so they actually had to take one of the keys and cut the upper plastic part off and install it in the system in the dash to bypass it. And it was $60 to replace the key at the dealer.

The only non-stock thing on my Z is a remote starter which was something that the previous owners installed. They live(d) in a suburb of Detroit. If you wanted me to, I'd dig out the fobs that operate the remote start and tell you what kind they are. I stopped using them because I would always forget I had remote started the car and then I'd turn the key too far and the starter would screech at me. (Lots of street noise so I wouldn't be able to hear that the engine was purring.) So I took those fobs off before I ruined the starter by accident.

I'm getting one at Classic Stereo tomorrow. They are having a huge sale and no payments for a year. The one I'm getting is Astrostart I believe. Its around $230 installed to work with Passkey (whatever version I have on my Cutlass. I think its II). Although I might change my mind and get the nicer Clifford system I saw there. After all, no payments and no interest for a year!

you ask alot don't you...........

car tunes had one for 109 installed last week, who knows if it will work; seeing as all cars have some kind of pass key i wouldn't see why but you never know.

i would think 200 would be a safe number to spend if you can't do it yourself.

i did mine on both my cars for a little under 50 in parts so it shouldn't be too much.

Thumbs down

Before I got sick I worked in GM dealerships for many years. On the 98 up GMC trucks when people were installing remote starters it was causing the computer to malfuction and the transmissions were burning up. GM would not warranty the trans repairs. If I were going to install one I would call Brian Isler and ask him if they are still having that problem. If you can't reach him ask for John or Sammy in service. Tell them you know Chris Jackson and I said you should call. The # is 586 739/7400. They may have come up with updated ones that don't interfer with the onboard computer by now. I retired 14 months ago because of my health. I have found that all the aftermarket people claim there systems didn't effect the onboard computer. But every trans that failed that had a remote start had the same failer of the trans and computer. Again call Brian Isler,John Hatcher or Sammy in Service.
