Anyone got a TIG welder? I need some help
I've got a Chomemoly roll cage coming but I'm out of money and need some help installing it. Is there anyone close that is willing to lend me a hand with the TIG welding?
If you can get the car down to Carleton (near Monroe), i have a friend that can and will TIG in your cage for ya...
Give him a call Doug @ 734-654-6263,
He has a ton of experience in chassis and cage work.

Thanks for the help suggestions! I'll be giving you all a call. I have one fellow here locally that welds on the Cyclotron at MSU, but if he doesn't call back, I might be making that trip.
I'm taking the interior out right now. (Welll, not *right* now). I've only found one little spot of rust so far, and it's amazing how shiny those 19 year old panels look under that carpet!
Hafta be careful though... 19 year old plastic can break easily.

Al,
If I'm not mistaken with the chromoly cages they have to be TIG welded to be legal.

Why? Who says so?
I know that chrome moly is an alloy tube. Steel, chromium, and molyebedinum (sp). But why can't it be mig welded with the correct wire?
Inquireing minds need to know.

Does anybody know the answer to the above questions?

I believe it has something to do with the depth of the weld. I will do some checking and find out more.

It's in the NHRA rule book. If you are putting a bar in why not make it legal.

I would really appreciate that.
I am still trying to find out for sure, but what I have learned from a journeyman toolmaker friend of mine is that with TIG welding chromoly you have to use filler rods (kind of like ARC welding) but with the gun of a MIG welder. He said that you can get a conversion kit for a MIG to make it a TIG, this changes the tip on the gun so the arc comes out of the gun and you use chromoly filler rods for the material. Whereas in MIG welding you are using the wire as the filling material.
