wondering how do you drive it back since you dont have the title to get a temp. plate. we know you need ins., but how do you plate it? and if you get a mi. temp. somehow, will that work while driving through other states? anyone been through this? thanks asking for johns uncle. guess he maybe getting a sweet low mile GN.

drove one home once from Indiana with no plate at all. I wouldnt suggest that though. One idea is to bring a current plate off another car and just hope it dosent get run on the way home. Obey the laws and you should be ok. Or if you can get you hands on a dealer on in transit plate they can be put on any car

The Formula you worked on the other night was bought in Ohio. I had to have proofs of insurance and my drivers liscense, along with the signed and notarized(not all states require that obviously) title and went to the BMV office. I paid $10 and got a 30 day temp tag and 30 day temp registration. Pretty good deal because that was valid not only in Ohio but anywhere else I wanted to go.

My advice would be to call a state police post or BMV/DMV/secretary of states office etc for wherever it is this car would be coming from. They can tell you exactly what you need to do. Im especially glad I did since we all know how much OH cops love MI drivers.

If you've already seen the car and decided u want it, have the seller fed-ex the title to you, transfer it, plate it, and insure it.

 

When I bought my stang in Wisconsin, I drove her back to michigan with no tags. I stopped for gas on the way, and a state Wisconsin trooper pulled up next to me. He was just there himself to go into the store, so when he came back out I asked him what the rules and regulations were for buying a car and driving it home to get it tagged. He basically told me that I "could get a ticket" for lack of registration, but as long as I had the title that was signed and dated, chances were no-one was going to give me ticket. Keep in mind that this was in wisconsin, so it may vary from state to state.

 

I'm not sure how it works for private parties, but at the dealership where I work, if a person from out of state buys a car from us, we just write them a temp. Call the secretary of state's office and ask them what is the best thing to do.

Make sure that if you are buying a car from a state like Ohio that you be wary of the possible hassles. Ohio is a title-holding state, meaning that if there is a LIEN on the car the bank holds the title. It can make it difficult to get the title.

 

In Michigan, according to the inspecting officer that just certified my salvage title car for the road, you have the right (in Michigan) to drive the car home after you purchase it with no tags, insurance etc as long as you have your bill of sale with you. If you put plates from another car you can be ticketed for it. As for what the law is outside of the state, I do not know.

bought my z in north carolina and drove it home, no plate.


bought an old nova in illinois and drove it home, no plate.

i was umm, how to put it, not stopped but questioned by an officer in indiana about the lack of plate at a gas station.
i explained i just bought it and was driving it home and he said it was fine there. same as michigan they give you a day or two to bring a vehicle home after you buy it.

however in ilinios it is illegal to drive a vehicle without a temp plate and insurance, but they ain't open much on the weekend.



try to do as suggested if you can get the title and plates before hand do it. if not, take a valid plate, make sure its for a car if your buying a car or a truck plate if your buying a truck.
whoever drives you there, have them follow you close on the way home, so it's harder for people to see you don't have a plate. traveling in daytime with traffic helps too, lack of traffic makes you stand out.



if your pulled over out of state explain to them michigan allows you like 48 or 72 hrs to get a vehicle home after you buy it and you thought all states gave the same courtesy. hope for the best.




ok now, quick story, i just bought my z down in NC. never had a fast car like that, fastest was that nova..... so we've got cb's and i'm talking to my buddy that came with, he said it drove nice and calm, couldn't really tell she was a stick.
so we're at this light about a mile from where i buy it, i'm making a left turn and i said screw it, lets see what she has.

reved it to about 3000 rpms and dumping the clutch making a left turn, holy crap, i about sh##, she slid sides like i was on ice, i straightened it out just in time to see the cop crest the hill in front of me!!! boy i cut that close! long was from home with no plate, pulling that!! lol, i blew away a mustang on the expressway going home as well.......man i miss that car, gotta get the engine together!

 

I bought my GTA from a guy in Mass. We met 1/2 way in PA and he let me use his plates for the trip home. I then got a MI plate on it ASAP and sent his back right away. Don't know if that was legal or not, but didn't have any problems.
