American Buying Canadian Car
American Buying Canadian Car
Has anyone from the states ever bought a car from Canada and brought it back home? What if any problems are there with this? Emissions? Duty?
Probably going to be selling the IROC.

If you do a search over int he forums at www.turbododge.com you will find this topic. One thing I can say is it ain't worth all the trouble. There are some many forms and crap to go thru... Then you have to get the car EPA certified in the US once you get it there in order to get a title. Also the speedo is supposed to be changed or calibrated and the automatic headlights are supposed to be disabled. Read up on that site you'll see...
Not a big deal at all - if you know what you are doing. I have imported a total of 5 cars since I have moved here in Sept of 99.
What year and make is the car and I can tell you what you will need? Send me an e-mail if you like.

FYI - Been there done that...
Bob - here is the reply to your e-mail about your 88IROC - I am posting it here for anyone else that is looking to do this some day.

Yes, that car qualifies. The car that is being imported must meet US EPA and DOT standards. There are some exceptions to the matter. Most Canadian built North American cars qualify. The buyer will definitely need the export letter from GM Canada's Vintage Vehicle Services (way to go GM with looking after the customers - Ford and Dodge doesn't offer that service openly). This letter will notify customs that the car passes DOT and EPA specs.
I would bet the car passes EPA but not DOT - since it is a Canadian vehicle the differences are minor and they pass.
EPA Qualified cars:

DOT Qualified cars:

Hope this helps - this is something the buyer of your car will need to do.
