Upstate NY area.....
Upstate NY area.....
I'm about to be stationed at Fort Drum, NY and I'm in a big debate with myself on whether to bring the car with me. I hear the weather up there is terrible and that you can't bring the car out until April each year. Is that true? I've even heard some guys use "winter" and "summer" rims. I'm from the south, in a part where it does NOT snow so this is all new to me, I want to keep my car in the best condition so is that even realistic with me being in an area like that? Thanks in advance.....
Yeah, its true man. From about november to april you should try and keep your car off the road. Its mostly the road salt they use to keep the ice melted. Thats what you really have to worry about. Also, traction is a big issue in snow. If i were you id keep it under wraps. When mid april hits then you can drive it around up here, just kinda wait till then. I have a couple friends up at drum, watertown is especially bad for snow fall. see-ya,

yup, im stationed at fort drum. i dont drive until around mid april and had to put the car down in like mid october this year. it sucks, but that just means you get all that time to modify it during the winter. they salt the hell out of the roads here and its not even possible to try and drive on it as they are not quick to plow on base.
BTW if you need a winter vehicle i will have one for sale. its a 94 ford explorer. look me up when you get here too. also what is your MOS?

yeah, well syraucse has about 150" of snow so far this year, so you might consider it bad. ft. drum prolly got a touch more since they are north of the cuse!
anyways, i think winter is breaking (knock on wood). its been 60 the last 3 days and looks to be in the 50+ the rest of this week. so we can cross our fingers, but again, its upstate NY, so who knows. i think you will be ok, bringing up your ride! if you keep your car clean, the salt wont effect your ride!
its better to have it and not use it, then to not have it and it be great weather to cruise around in.
i havent hooked up with jerry, but i met another guy who is stationed at ft. drum. craig is his name btw. im not familiar with up north (45-1hr drive) from me, but there are several things around here!

I used to live in Pulaski, 30 miles south of Fort Drum, Don't drive the Camaro in the winter out there! Sure you can make it through some pretty bad lake effect snow (done it a bunch of times while visiting for christmas, but the salt will really rust up the bottom of your car.
I've ben in detroit the past 7 years, and have driven the camaro through 6 winters, the car still runs great but any suspension or exhaust work is a pain in the *** since everything is rusted together.
Do yourself a favor, get a beater for the winter!!
