Home Depot or Lowes?

Just wondering what everyone else around here prefers. I use to be a die hard Home Depot person, that was untill yesterday. I went out to buy lumber to use on the bottom of the garage. I first went to Home Depot and I have to tell you I was dissapointed once again. Their wood was in shambles.... It looked like a hurricance came thru there and destroyed it. I finally found the size I was looking for but I had to search thru the piles for decent straight boards. I finnaly had it and went to the new Lowes on Rt. 38/73. Wow, I was truly ammazed. Yeah I know its new but their lumber was neat, in order and I didnt hvae to wade thru piles of junk wood to get to the good stuff. I was buying 2x10x8 rpessure treated boards. I didnt even ask for help when an employee saw me loading 20 of them on a cart. He came over to help, walked with me to the register and then helped me load it in the truck and tie it down. Had it been Home Depot, I would have been given a swift kick in the butt and sent on my way. I think I am switching teams here (not literally) and going to Lowes from now on.

Tough call,i cant vote cause i like both.
Lowes is better for lumber around here,i'll go there for those needs.
Depot is better for tools and hardware etc, prices are also good.

the correct answer is lowes
of course, i may be a little biased sionce that is where i work.
honestly you will find basically teh same prices at both places. both companies shop the hell out of each other to keep up. any offer you find in teh paper fro either store, teh othe rcompany will honor. actually taht is true of almost any advertised price on any product that both carry as in stock items. both companies can also special order damn near anything for you as long as you have soem clue what you need, both do installs on tons of stuff for good prices.
customer service ismost liekly similar in both places, it really boils down to if the person in front of you cares or not.
lowes tends to be a bit better lit adn home depot, i have been told by a lot fo people, treats their employees liek crap.(ie: no employee discount because they claim their prices are so low they can't afford it, which is crap since lowes is the smaller of teh 2 companies and we get a discount off of anythng we want even if it is a special order item)

Lowes may be better for you guys in NJ but around here I've had more luck with Home Depot. I've always found what I needed at Home Depot when I couldn't at Lowes. However I've never bought wood from Lowes, just Home Depot so I don't know what their quality is like. The only thing I like about Lowes is the color of their buildings. I prefer their blue to the Orange/Tan Home depots.

Maybe we have a bum HD here. I've been taking notice to them both. Both companies as far as price goes is very similar. Just as Tim said they will beat any price at both places, but once that is all settled, I think Lowes has the upper hand in customer service. I have been to Lowes 3 times now and all three times I found myself looking for something and before I had a chance I had an employee asking if they could help. I have not had that kind of treatment at HD in a loooong time. I have always heard that for wood/lumber that Lowes is the place to go. After my experience this weekend I belive it. I bought 16 of the .40 pressure treated 2x10's and 4 2x8's... I didnt find 1 bad piece of lumber in each section. HD... I was lucky if I could find 2-3 good ones. I'm going to Lowes for a while untill HD gets their act together.

Thats one of the great things about competition. we were stuck with HD for a long time. Now that Lowes is here I realized how bad the HD has been. If they want to keep their customers they will start bringing their buisness up to par with Lowes... I love the good ole USA!

Being that there are four Home Depot's within 30 minutes of me and one Lowes I would have to say the Depot. All the stuff I've done to the house so far has come from them. I do hear that Lowes has waaaay better lumber selection though. I know what you mean about the Depot's lumber, their stuff is sometimes a real mess and you have to work just to try to find some decent pieces.

I can't vote. I like Lowes, but I hate the traffic it has caused on Business Route 1 - it's insane. I'm not really crazy about Home Depot.

I picked Home Depot. Little biased because my dad works there.

I've started going to Lowes now, the Home Depot has always had some lousy lumber. The tools are decent, but the new Lowes is much nicer to shop in. So Tim, are you working in the new one on Rt1?

i am on rt.1 for a few more weeks. i do front office work for them. i am transfering to the new one they are just building in hillsborough on rt206.

unfortunately lowes has stopped selling kobalt tools, they switched to allen tools which are complete garbage. husky tools are pretty good, that is what most of my tools are now, and it looks liek it will stay that way for a while until lowes picks up a brand taht doesn't suck again.

I gotta say Home Depot for the simple reason that I don't like Jimmie Johnson. Either way, there is WAY too many of both of them in NJ
