z28 weak performance

Hi everybody i'm new to your bored and a mediocre mechanic but I have a general question. I recently bought a 95 z28 6sp convt bone stock other then cold air. I've noticed that the car feels unusually slow, it dosn't have a whole lot of pull at the low end but its got nothing at all at the high end. About a month ago I raced an 00 Grand prix GT I hooked up and he pulled on me untill 3rd were I inched infront of him and ended up about 1/2 to 3/4 car lengths ahead in the end. I think that makes my car mid 15's any ideas on what might be wrong?

Get the car scanned first and foremost. Get a tune up as well. You should absolutely destroy a Grand Prix GT.

just cracked 90k other then the fact that its slow it runs good. New wires and plugs sounds like a good idea but it looks to be hell to get to them. How much would it cost to get it serviced?

Paying to get these cars serviced is very expensive. You gotta learn to work on it yourself in order to save some $$$.

lol, when I was doing my plugs and wires, I was fine on the driver side. Then I started the passenger and was like AH **** this. SO i called a few places, they said 200-350 for plugs/wires. Do it yourself....

I wouldn't like mine if it were slow either. He's just dissapointed since he expected a lot more.

You sure it wasn't a GTP? Those things have 240 horses stock and they are supercharged, so with some minor modifications, they can become a challenge to a stock F-body.

I've raced a slightly modded one back when my '95 M6 was stock and I could only get about half car on him. (we raced only till about 60ish or 70)

1st Welcome to the Board.
I know after i had my car for a bit it was slow. But after doing a tad bit maintance items and then some performance items it is awake now.

Not knowing the car ( is the SES light coming on at all?), I would 1st clean the little resistors in the Mass airflow sensor. Dont touch them and spray with electrical contact cleaner till they are shiny on both sides.

You kinda hit on of the big bottlenecks, that exhaust. Is it still stock? If it is consider a cutout. That should help.

one symptom is that the idle seems to be very fast. At cold start up it idles at 1500 then will drop down to between 950 1000 rpms

sounds to me like your coil is bad. Its easy to change. Also, i like the recommendation of the cat. Get an ORP, change the coil and coil wire, change plugs/wires, and fuel filter and you will be completly tuned with added hp up top without that cat on there. It really wont cost much, my ORP at an exhaust shop was $50. Coil=35, plugs/wires=70. So you spend that much and have a great running car. Chances are that the plugs have never been touched since the factory. Oh, and the fuel filter is only $8 and is EASY to change. Try all of this, then come back
