Z28 Owners

I want to know where you battery gauge needle sits after warm up while driving around with the AC, lights, stereo off. Last night my car would turn over and it would just put put put and shut off. Finally after turning it over about 10 times it turned on again and i left it running for about 10 mins with the lights and stereo off and i got on it and drove around for about 5 min and at the beginning of the 5min it would fee as if it wanted to shut off so at stops I breaked and gas it at the same time so it wouldnt shut off and then it went away and my gauge was 1/2 way the whole time. Possible the battery is going out?

Take a Multimeter and check the voltage on the battery cold... and whn it's running.

Should be 10 or ABOVE COLD... AND 13 AND ABOVE WHEN THE ALTINATOR IS RUNNING WHEN STARTED.

I checked the battery with the ignition switch on and the load was at 12.4 and with the car turned on the reading was 13.8. I havent replaced the plugs and wires and opti in over 3yrs....can this be why the car is doing what its doing ?

Id Use a multi-meter. I have always loved the output of the alternator (140A).

Your battery is good, and your getting good voltage off your altinator.

but I would take the altinator off have it tested... how old is your battery?

When I had a bad altinator actually 2 bad one... I had the same symptoms.

but the questions is does it cut off after it's running... or is it just a hard starting problem.

Starting wise the simplist thing to check is the Starter.

Re: Z28 Owners

the voltage for the battery should be 12.6 volts. set your meter on DC volts. With engine running voltage should be 13.8 to 14.6 volts with full load of accesories. Some after market sound systems can put an above average load on the alternator thus overloading the system. Perhaps a greater outpout alt. is in store. Check the battery voltage first. At 12.4 volts your batt. is allready low.

Re: Z28 Owners

2 days ago i was at the In - N - Out drive through and I had my a/c on along with the headlights and stereo and out of nowhere i noticed the battery gauge was sitting in between the middle and where the red starts (where it is in little dots) and then my SES light came on...I turned off the headlights and stereo and the light went off after 5min and the battery gauge was right above the middle....

Re: Z28 Owners

The mechanic told me that I have an oil leak coming from my oil cooler gasket and it is leaking onto my starter and this is one reason for it starting hard and another reason is that my plugs are out because I hydrolocked my car several months ago but never changed the plugs.....

is this possible?
