Your motor, cam, and rpm range
Your motor, cam, and rpm range
I would just like to know what most ppl's rpm range is for their built motors. I would just like to see ppl's shift points where they got their best times at so I can relate that to the motor I'm building.
Mine is a fully forged 383 with a comp cam: 236/242, .555/.576, 112 lsa., lt1 heads flow 270/190, port matched intake, 58mm holley.
I am going to get my computer tuned and I am going to have the rev limit set at 6600 rpm, so I'll probably shift at 6500 or so. does that sound about right?

Re: Your motor, cam, and rpm range
My old setup was LE2 heads, ported LT1 intake, monoblade, 234/242@.050, similar lift, tighter lsa on a 383. Shift points on that setup were at 7000rpm. The new setup has a little more duration, more lift, tighter yet lsa, and a Super Vic, looking to shift this one around 7000-7100rpm but that will be determined from dyno numbers.
Re: Your motor, cam, and rpm range
forged and balanced 358. 2 bolt main with ARP studs. arp studs in all of the bottom end. BRE comp cams grind 230/236 .6xx/.6xx lift. stockish heads. i have rev set at 6800, but it will pull to 7k. max power is arounf 64-6500. it really starts making power from 3 on up, but make great torque from 2-4
Re: Your motor, cam, and rpm range
Good info guys. I emailed pcmforless and told them 6900 rev limit, hopefully he gets it. I dont think itll pull to 7k, it being a 383 street car, so hopefully i should be good.
Re: Your motor, cam, and rpm range
I'll tell you what you can do. Have him set the PCM limit where the cam should end, and if you don't have an MSD kit, then buy one, and use the pills to set the RPM limit atleast 100rpm before the computer rev limit, or play around and set it where you feel comfortable at. My car taps out at 6300 I have it set for 6200 for insurance. It's been working well so far.
Re: Your motor, cam, and rpm range
11 year old LPE 383 (Callies, Oliver, JE) bottom end. LPE/E.B. Porting LT1 casting heads (2.00/1.56s) Joe O. 22X/23X .56X/.56X cam...shift points are 6300...3.73s, 3600 Vig...Times in sig are before Kooks LTs, EWP and Bogarts...
Re: Your motor, cam, and rpm range
^ Thats a good comparison to my motor. Your cam is a little smaller but your heads probably flow a little better because you have bigger valves. These are all good examples so people can decide about where theyll have to rev their motor when their building it. I know the only true way to tell is on a dyno or at the track, but this does help.
Re: Your motor, cam, and rpm range
I like that I can run what I run and not spin the motor to the moon. My bottom end has been flawless since its assembly in 1995 and I think the somewhat low rpms definitely helps. I've always ben a fan of the smaller cams...Hell, this 220ish cam replace my old LPE 211/219! Although I may go a wee bit bigger if I get close enough to the 10s to justify it...
..and my heads flow very similar to yours. The head flow and dyno numbers can be manipulated so get it tuned on the dyno and hit the track looking at your mph as a guide to what kind of power you are making. The dyno is a great tuning tool, but don't worry too much about the numbers as long as your tune is good...
