Yeah LT1's suck.
Yeah LT1's suck.
Well I just got the car back and running right then this happens. It was running perfect for hours on the highway taking it home when suddenly my car started to stumble and sputter. I was going about 50 when it gave up on me. At WOT the car was still decelerating and popping. I pulled the car over, turned it off and looked under the hood, nothing recognizable of course. The car barely started back up like the battery was low (7yrs old!) until it would not start again.
After we towed it home I replaced the battery and it was starting to kick over better but still would not idle right. I'm not sure if it could be the altenator but I doubt it. I checked all the wires none are burnt. The plugs are brand new. The opti is a brand new MSD unit, and the injectors are almost brand new. I tried spraying starter fluid into the TB to see how long it would run and try and see if this issue was an electrical or fuel related, but it will only pop once the oil pressure starts to raise, and really isnt even trying to start.
Any suggestions??

I cant stand statements like this, if you crave reliability get a Honda and quit bitching about your 12 year old car that is not GM stock.
That being said it sounds like your problem lies with the ignition system. Check the wires for arcing by spraying them down with a water bottle. Could your rockers be too tight?

Re: Yeah LT1's suck *****.
Haven't the MSD opti's been having problems? With all i've read on the board here lately about them, there hit or miss. I wouldn't rule that out yet. Also, how many volts is the car putting out after it's running? Your sure the alt. didn't take out the battery? If you ain't putting enough juice out while it's running, it can screw things up. Would be best to measure off the altenator with a meter, but if you don't have one, whats your volt gauge reading in the car when it's running?

I sure havent heard about the MSD optis having 'misses'. When they were released they seemed like a very high quality, advanced as well as EXPENSIVE product. Stock optis are trash and Accel is known to be cheap. I guess Dynaspark is another possible alternative.
Re: Yeah LT1's suck *****.
there's been a few reports of the MSD unit failing horribly. check out some of the MSD threads here and see for yourself.
i'd replace with an accel unit if you have to tear it apart again. they seem to have hit the nail on the head...figuratively speaking.

my opti went out backfired like crazy out the ex. slowly decelerated, let the engine cool started ran till up to temp, then kaboom allover again, took me 45 mins. to drive 1mile home , had to keep pulling over and let the car cool down.
