Re: Re: yanked my oil cooler

Around town coolant temps are definitely lower, highway temps are slightly higher, but still only just above the halfway mark.
I am running Mobil 1 10w 30 with about 1000 miles on it

I agree that oil temps can be much higher than water temps, but I still wonder if there is enough time for the water to pull heat from the oil. I think I would have rather seen an traditional air heat exchange cooler.

My cooling sytem is a bit unconventional and seems to work just fine. I have no heater core, and now no oil cooler, so overall coolant capacity is diminished. At the same time I also pulled the a/c condensor and it's shroud, the radiator itself is no longer blocked and is open to fresh air without restriction.

By not running a hose from the pump to the radiator (as the car would come from GM if it didn't have an oil cooler), aren't you reducing the amount of time your coolant spends in the radiator? If you haven't seen a reduction in your coolant temps, that's probably why. As far as coolant being too hot to cool oil, if you really push your car you'll see oil temps of 300+ degrees after about 10 minutes in summer weather, which is much hotter than your coolant will/can ever get. The factory oil cooler seems to be worth about 20 degrees of oil temp reduction compared to not having one in stressed conditions. For street driving though, the cooler is definitely not necessary, especially with synthetic oil.
