To Y-body or not to Y-body?
To Y-body or not to Y-body?
I currently have a 94 Trans Am that I supercharged and added some other goodies to. With the C6 coming around the corner, I have noticed some really good deals on some C5's. My question is for the people that have driven both a F-body and a Y-body. Other than looks, is there really that much of a difference? I know that the F-bodies always get a toned down version of the vette engine, I'm just on the fence of should I buy a vette....or will I just find it to be a Trans Am with a different body? What are the major advantages to a vette over it's stepbrother the Camaro? Thanks.
buy my vette

We own both a C5 and a LS1 SS, the C5 is hands down more of a sports car. Try all you must but a F-Body can't compare to a Y-Body. Independant rear, aluminum A Arms, better geometry, and a lower CG make it a much better driving experience. The bolt on parts cost more on a C5 but that's about the only bad thing. I would look for a M6 with a 3.42 rear if I was going to get one.

I am going to be getting a C5 next, so I can answer this question in a couple of years.
I did own a 98 Formula though, bought it new in April 98 and had it until November 2000. The one thing I miss most about my LS1 is that it could run the same time at the dragstrip with a hot engine as it did with a cold engine. With my LT1, I lose a lot off my ET if the engine is hot. The only time I can hotlap the car at the dragstrip without losing a ton of horsepower is if it's very cold outside (below 40F)
Buddy has decided to get a z06 or c6 and has a blown ati
97taws6.He blew it up at about 8psi.It was stock pistons though.
It lasted about a week boosted.
I lately also had a bit of vette fever.Buddy got to drive a zo6 and said its great .I got to drive a guys c5.My impressions.looks 9/10 very nice looking car.not as mean as my ws6 99 but refined and exotic.Handling...its a vette think they pull close to 1g stock...9/10.This was a vert not a zo6.Brakes..they have nice big brakes...9/10. Ride..this is one area the c5 vert sucked at.He had the adjustable supsension but not the magnetic stuff. This was a 98 vette.Even on soft the thing road like crap on our admittedly bad roads. My 80 ta with 25 year old shocks rode about as bad as the 98 vette. That ride would major get on my nerves pretty quick. But I guess maybe changing shocks or something might have helped.
Now pretty sure the c6 will have better ride..I really hope so.
Acceleration..well buddy said the z06 was very quck and we know they are.The c5 likely had the pathetic 2.73 gears and was stock at the time . 7.5 to 8/10 It was pretty slow off the line and did gain speed nicely though and of course with those lazy gears it was a beast on the highway at high speeds. It was also an auto vette.
So my advice..get at least the 3.23 gears the 2.73 blow. And don't expect a stock c5 to be super fast there are lots of cars that will blow your tailights off with a few mods.A few mods on the vette though and things can turn around fast.A z06 is very fast out of the box and a few mods on it you have a supercar.
The new c6 will be lighter and have 400 stock so it should be very nice out of the box too.Personally to be happy and have the ultimate car I would have to twin turbo a c6 but thats just me.
If they dont' come out with a reasonably affordable twin or single turbo kit for my 99 then just might get me c6 to play with.Might keep my ws6 too though. Why not already have bunch of cars whats another one..
