XE comparison

i know what you're thinkin, NOT ANOTHER CAM THREAD!
this will cover a topic that i have not seen discussed yet. comparing the driveability of the 224/230 and the 230/236. would there be any major issues? like passing the sniffer test, day to day driveability? assume either one would be tuned. since they are the same price, would it be worth goin to the 230? would it greatly affect a daily driver? any other concerns?

I would get the 224 on a stock bottom end. It will rev as high as you'd prob want to rev it. going more is just a waste of powerband imho.

Its better to undercam a bit than overcam a bit to me

Cool

I just installed ported heads and XE230/236/112. I gotta say this cam is AWESOME! I gained lots of torque at all RPMs ... even as low as 1800 RPM! I had some cam surge when trying to drive slow (1200-1600 RPM) but I adjusted the timing, and now I have NO SURGE and LOTS OF TORQUE! But I have to admit that I wouldn't want to go any bigger in my daily driver 350ci. My idle is so loud and lopey I have to shut the car off when I go through some drive-thrus. But if you don't got the heads for it, stick with the 224 cam. I bet it still makes the same great low end torque too.

Mikey97z, what did your heads flow and did you advance or retard your timing?
I've got that cam on the way.

"i think the engine is right upto the mic in your diesel truck"

They nearly **** their pants when a camaro pulled up
Then they asked me to shut it off while they got my food. the exhuast was making their eyes burn

..yeah, i need tuning

I was asked to shut off my '89 Camaro RS 2.8 V6 at a drive-thru once because it was too loud. This thing had a JET chip, shift kit, K&N filters, hi-flow cats, and the obligatory Flowmaster 80 series and dual 3.5" slashcuts. It seriously sounded like a cammed engine, no one could explain why. Both previous owners are F-body owners to this day and claim they never touched the internals. It made a massive 106rwhp on the dyno...fear.

(now back to our regularly scheduled programming)

phancom - if you dont plan on getting heads sooner rather than later, stick with the 224. It's by no means mild for an otherwise stock motor and will give you the driveability you're looking for.

257/203@.6 182cc intake runner. Here's the flowbench data.

I was able to advance the timing a lot in the 2-5k RPM range so far. Advancing the 1-2k range was causing some surging, so I put that back. Also I advanced the idle about 4 degrees. That's it so far. Still lots of tuning to do.

10 bolts can go at any time depending on how hard you launch. If you're on street tires on sealed concrete, you have to work it real hard to snap. But, on the track with slicks and VHT... you might be in trouble. It is mostly in the launch and shifts.

Todd Carpenter runs with us in the Silver State open highway competitions in a 96 Camaro with a 10-Bolt over 200 MPH.
